Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, everyone.

Hyunwoo: It's iyagi time again. Today—Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: How about if we talk about mountain hiking?

Kyeong-eun: Mountain hiking?

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: But Hyunwoo, you've never gone mountain hiking.

Hyunwoo: I've gone mountain hiking lots of times.

Kyeong-eun: Lots?

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: When you were young?

Hyunwoo: I'd gone mountain hiking a lot when I was young, and in university I'd gone a few times, but lately I don't go, of course. I've lost interest in it so I don't go, but I think mountain hiking is extremely good.

Kyeong-eun: It's good for your health, right?

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Kyeong-eun—what is mountain hiking? Through a simple explanation?

Kyeong-eun: It's going up a mountain.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. It's going to a mountain, of course.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. It's going to a mountain.

Hyunwoo: It's going to the mountain and hiking all the way up to the peak, of course.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. That's right.

Hyunwoo: Since it's climbing while walking, anyone can do it, but if your knees hurt or your hip hurts, you mustn't be able to go, right?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I believe they say that mountain hiking isn't good for people whose knees aren't good.

Hyunwoo: Not going is good. But if there's nothing particularly difficult about the path, when you go mountain hiking you get quite a lot of exercise, and also your mood changes a lot, and it seems good.

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah?

Hyunwoo: I guess you don't really agree with me.

Kyeong-eun: I hate mountain hiking.

Hyunwoo: Why?

Kyeong-eun: Mountain hiking. Before when I worked at another company, there were times when we were forced to go mountain hiking. Many times we were forced to go. So I started hating it.

Hyunwoo: Before being forced to go mountain hiking at that company, had you ever gone alone, individually?

Kyeong-eun: I'd never tried going alone, but when I was little our dad always took me and my brother mountain hiking a lot. So when I was little I'd really loved it. I enjoyed going.

Hyunwoo: When I was young, on the contrary, I really didn't like it, because it's hard. Later after going into the army, we mountain-hike, don't we?

Kyeong-eun: When you go into the army, you don't hate it more?

Hyunwoo: Now having done it, it's hard, but it gets easier. “If it's only this much, what the heck.” So later after going into the army, when you climb something like a small mountain it's so easy, it's like taking a walk, so I thought, “If it's this easy, why not do it often?” but after that I didn't go mountain hiking much.

Kyeong-eun: I haven't gone lately, you see. You know Mt. Gwanak? Mt. Gwanak? (Yeah. I know it.) Among the mountains in Seoul, Mt. Gwanak is an extremely difficult mountain. I understand that hiking it is extremely hard. I think they say hard mountains have “Ack!” in them [“Ack!” is a sound expressing exertion of energy, so it's called GwanACK! Mountain].

Hyunwoo: Mt. Gwanak. Mt. Bugak.

Kyeong-eun: They say mountains with “Ack” in them are difficult. My friends tricked me. “You can take an extremely easy course. Within just two hours you can climb the mountain and come back down. It's perfectly like just taking a walk.” Having tricked me like this, I went but it took five hours. It took five hours and my legs were so tight I thought I was dying.

Hyunwoo: You didn't die, did you.

Kyeong-eun: I didn't die, of course.

Hyunwoo: There are quite a lot of good mountains you can climb in Seoul, but besides Seoul, there are a lot of other places too that have famous mountains, right?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: The very first famous mountain that comes to mind is Mt. Halla in Jeju.

Kyeong-eun: I've never been to Mt. Halla. I want to go. I understand they say that it's extremely beautiful.

Hyunwoo: Unlike other mountains, at Mt. Halla it doesn't feel like you're mountain hiking; it really feels like you're going for a walk.

Kyeong-eun: But I hear they say it's extremely difficult.

Hyunwoo: If you want to go to the end it's like that, and since Jeju Island itself is Mt. Halla, since it's connected to Mt. Halla, there are several areas. There are places that are extremely similar that you can go to easily, and I've climbed up to the middle of Mt. Halla, on a day when it was snowing. It was really hard.

Kyeong-eun: It seems like there's really a lot of mountains in Korea.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. And in my hometown of Gwangju, there are also places we say are mountainless, anyway—if you say you want to go to a mountain, in Korea wherever you may be you can go to a mountain within an hour.

Kyeong-eun: Really.

Hyunwoo: In other cities that I know there aren't any mountains. So even if you want to go to a mountain, there are also places where you have to take a car for a few hours, but in that regard Korea seems like a good place.

Kyeong-eun: But I think it would be good if you tried avoiding them on the weekend. These days mountain hiking has become really trendy. So on the weekend, older men and women, and lately even youngsters hike mountains a lot, so on the weekend you can't go sightseeing at the mountain, except to go people-watching.

Hyunwoo: The person in front of you's back.

Kyeong-eun: You can go see the back of the person in front of you and the extremely varied colors of hiking sportswear.

Hyunwoo: But since we've brought up mountain-hiking clothes, it occurs to me, my foreign friends have asked, “When they go mountain hiking, why do Koreans wear special clothes?”

Kyeong-eun: That's right. When I went to Mt. Gwanak that one time, too, all the Koreans wore hiking clothes, and they wear hiking boots, too, don't they? But to the very summit, foreigners go mountain hiking in sandals. So I was so surprised. Wearing sandals and shorts, they'd come mountain hiking with really comfortable attire. I, at least, was really surprised.

Hyunwoo: While going mountain hiking, I've never once worn hiking clothes and boots. Just wearing sneakers and jeans, I'd gone dressed like this, but I didn't feel that anything was particularly difficult, you see.

Kyeong-eun: I think you'd slip. In my opinion.

Hyunwoo: And also later having gotten older, if you want to go mountain hiking and your knees hurt or something, you can use shoes that they say are less difficult, or walking-sticks and this kind of thing, of course. If you try going often, since your clothes get dirty right away, and you sweat a lot, wanting to wear clothes that let the sweat go through them and the wind go through them, it seems like you end up preparing special mountain-hiking clothes, but... the reason mountain hiking draws popularity: it doesn't require money, does it?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Originally it's something that doesn't require it.

Hyunwoo: Originally it was like that, of course. But if you buy hiking clothes and if you take a car far away to hike a mountain, having taken your car, and if you eat a meal, it can be extremely expensive.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It's really expensive. But if you don't worry about those kinds of things I think it's a really good hobby. And it's so good for your health, too.

Hyunwoo: And something that mountain hiking can be good for to travelers, having hiked a mountain, if you climb up a tall mountain in Seoul, you can see all of the city, can't you?

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: In other cities that's not necessarily the case.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, I see.

Hyunwoo: Right?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: You can only see it if you go up a tall building, but in Seoul if you go up a reasonable mountain, you can look down on the city.

Kyeong-eun: And you can hear the sound of water in the ravines, and the air is good, and it seems like a good thing.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun and I don't often go mountain hiking, but because we think mountain hiking itself is extremely good, since we recommend it, if you, our listeners, come to Seoul, there are Mt. Bugak, Mt. Gwanak, Mt. Surak, Mt. Dobong, these kinds of places, aren't there? Since there are quite a lot of them, I wonder how it would be going to see them once.

Kyeong-eun: In the future I plan on going mountain hiking. Really.

Hyunwoo: I don't believe you.

Kyeong-eun: Really. Really in the future I'm going to go mountain hiking. I'll upload a picture.

Hyunwoo: Yes. Please do that.

Kyeong-eun: So, everyone, please tell us about mountain hiking.

Hyunwoo: In your country, and the cities you live in, I'm curious whether there are a lot of mountains you can hike, and whether you go mountain hiking a lot. And probably like Kyeong-eun said, it seems like in other countries those special mountain-hiking clothes aren't sold much, but please let us know how it is.

Kyeong-eun: Yes, please tell us, everyone.

Hyunwoo: Thank you.

Kyeong-eun: Have a nice day.
