 경은: 그래서 저는 배드민턴이 굉장히 쉬운 운동이라고 생각했었는데, 제대로 배우면 굉장히 어렵다고 하던데요?

 현정: 네, 그냥 안에서만 했는데요. 작으니까 선배도 무섭지 않고 가르쳐 주는 사람도 없고. 그냥 자기들끼리 노는 거였어요.
Yeah, we just played amongst ourselves. Since we were a small group there weren’t any scary seniors or people to teach us. We just played by ourselves.
 경은: 사실 고등학교 운동부는 선배들이 무섭기로 유명하죠?
In reality, it’s popular to have scary seniors in high school athletic clubs eh?
 현정: 네 농구부같은 그런 거?
Yeah, clubs like basketball clubs?
 경은: 네 농구부, 야구부...

 현정: 그 쪽에는 가지 않았어요.

 경은: 그러면 언제부터 운동이 싫어졌어요?

 현정: 아니, 지금도 배드민턴이랑 탁구는 좋아요.

 현정: 그런데 힘들게 하는 게 싫어요. 놀러가서 하는 건 좋은데, 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리면서 한 시간 이상 해야 한다는 거는 싫어요.
But I hate tiring sports. I like playing them, but when you’re sweating buckets after an hour I hate them.
 경은: 저는 이해할 수 있어요. 달리기.
I can understand. Running.
 현정: 예. 달리기는 초등학교 때까지만 좋아했어요.
Yeah, I only liked running until elementary school.
 경은: 저는 달리기를 한 번도 좋아한 적이 없어요.
As for me, I have never liked running.
 현정: 음.

 경은: 달리기가 세상에서 제일 싫어요.
Running is the thing that I hate most in the world.
 현정: 하지만 경은 씨는 구두신고 잘 달리잖아요.
But Kyeong-eun runs very well with dress shoes on, you know!
 경은: 늦었을 때, 뛰어야만 할 때 뛰긴 하지만, 그런 거 있잖아요. “꼭 운동으로 달리기를 해야 한다. 건강을 달리기를 한다.” 이런 거를 저는 절대 이해할 수가 없어요.
When I’m late and I have to I run but, that’s true but “I have to run for exercise. I will run for my health.” That kind of thing I can’t understand.
 현정: 저는 하려고 해봤어요.
I gave it a try.
 경은: 그래요?

 현정: 그랬는데 무릎이 아파서 그만 뒀어요.
But my knee hurt so I quit.
 경은: 네. 근데 여러분 오해하지 마세요. 한국 여자들이 모두 운동을 싫어하는 건 아니고요.
Ah. Okay, everybody don’t misunderstand. Korean women don’t all hate exercise.
 현정: 그럼요.
That’s right.
 경은: 좋아하는 사람들 굉장히 많은데, 현정 씨와 제가 좀 싫어해요.
There are a lot of people that like it but us two kind of dislike it.
 현정: 재미있는 운동은 좋아하는데. 우리가 지금 할 수 있는 운동이 별로 없잖아요? 달리기하고…

 경은: 자전거, 저는 자전가 타는 거는 좋아하고요. 제가 좋아하는 운동은 자전거 타기, 그리고 인라인 스케이트 타기.
Bicycle, I like riding bicycles. The exercises I like are riding bicycles and in-line skating.
 현정: 탈 줄 알아요?
You know how to ride?
 경은: 잘 타요. 자전거랑 인라인은 잘 타요.
I ride well. I ride bicycle and in-line skate well.
 현정: 인라인 배우고 싶어요.
I want to learn how to in line skate.
 경은: 진짜요? 저희 다음에 주말에 인라인 타러 갈까요? (그럴까요?) 인라인 스케이트 타러 한강에 가면 여의나루 역이라고 있어요. 서울에. 여의나루역에 가면 인라인 스케이트 빌려 주니까 저희 꼭 가서 탈까요?
Really? Shall we go rollerblading next weekend? (Can we?) For inline skating if you go to the Han River there’s Yeouinaru Station. In Seoul. If you go to Yeouinaru you can rent skates and we can definitely go skating.
 현정: 저는 그리고 그것도 하고 싶어요. (뭐요) 스케이트.
I want to do that too (What?) Skating.
 경은: 아, 스케이트, 저 스케이트도 좀 타요. 이거 봐요 제가 운동을 싫어하지는 않아요.
Ah, skating, I skate a little. So you see here I don’t hate exercise.

 경은: 뭐 인라인 스케이트나 자전거나 또 뭐가 있을까요? 스노보드 이런 것들은 좋아해요. 근데, 달리기 아니면 헬스 이런 것들은 정말 싫어해요.

 현정: 그러니까 그게, 사람들이 이상하게 생각하는데, 제주도 사람 중에서 수영을 잘하는 사람 별로 없어요.
As for that, people have a strange way of thinking, there aren’t that many people from Jeju that can swim well.

 현정: 왜냐면, 수영장에 갈 필요가 없잖아요.
Because there’s no need for swimming pools.
 경은: 음, 바닷가에서 수영할 수 있잖아요.
Yeah, you can swim at the beach you know.
 현정: 그러니까, 바닷가에 수영할 수 있는데, 바닷가에서는 저 멀리까지 수영한다기보다는 물놀이를 하는 거잖아요. 수영을 할 필요가 그다지 없어요.
Well, you can swim at the beach, but more than swimming far I just play in the water. You don’t need to be able to swim for that.
 경은: 그러네요. 근데 왠지 바닷가 근처에 살면, 수영을 잘 할 것 같은…
Yeah. Well for some reason it seems that people that live near the ocean should be able to swim well.
 현정: 엄마는 잘 하세요.
My mom can swim well.

 현정: 그래서 가끔 문어를 잡아와요.
And she sometimes catches octopus.
 경은: 문어요?
Octopus?
 현정: 네, 바다에 가면 문어나, 그런 게 있잖아요. 저는 바닷가에 있는 성게는 캘 수 있는데.
Yes, if you go to the ocean there are things like octopus and the like. I dig up sea urchins in the ocean.
 경은: 성게요?
Urchins?
 현정: 네. 그러니까, 바닷가에 성개랑, 조개랑, 이런 게 있잖아요. 그런 거는 제가 딸 수 있는데. 문어는 바다 속으로 들어가야 해서 저는 못하죠. 하지만 엄마는 해요.
Yeah, so at the coast there are things like urchins and clams. I can get those kind of things. For octopus you have to go in the sea, which I can’t. But my mom can.
 경은: 멋지세요.

 경은: 저희 주제로 다시 돌아가서, 운동에 대해서 다시 이야기 할까요? 현정 씨는 지금 운동 전혀 안 하고 있나요?
Back to our topic, shall we talk about exercise again? You don’t do any exercise these days?
 현정: 그러네요. 문제가 많아요.

 경은: 할 계획은 있으세요?
Do you have a plan to do it?
 현정: 우리 수영 다니기로 하지 않았나요?

 경은: 좋아요. 근데, 저는 사실 현정 씨를 배신하고 운동을 시작했어요.
That’s good. So actually I betrayed you and started exercising.*
 현정: 언제요?

 경은: 오늘 아침부터.
From this morning.
 현정: 어디로?
Where?
 경은: 저희 집 뒤에 뒷동산이 있잖아요.
There’s a backhill behind my house.*
 현정: 네. 두 시간 걸린다는 ?
Ok. It takes two hours?
 경은: 근데 가 보니까 굉장히 낮은 산이었어요. 두 시간이 아니라 아침에 일찍 일어나서 엄마랑 같이 산에 잠깐 올라갔다가 내려오니까 딱 한 시간 걸렸어요.
Well it’s a really low hill. Rather than two hours I got up early in the morning with my mother and we went up and down the mountain together in a short time. It took exactly one hour.

 경은: 현정 씨도 아침 일찍 같이 운동할래요?
How about you get up early and let’s exercise together?

No. She won’t scold. Now that I think of it, it will be rainy season soon (ah, yes) I have a thought that we might not be able to walk so let’s again try our plan to start swimming.
 현정: 그런데, 있잖아요, (네) 현우 씨랑 석진 씨는 만날 운동을 한다는데, 진짜 턱걸이를 300개 하고 있을까요?
Ok, we have it. (Yes) So when we meet Hyunwoo and Seokjin for exercise will we do 300 chin ups?*
 경은: 저도 처음에는 턱걸이를 300개를 하는 줄 알았어요. 근데 그거 알아요? 현정 씨? 제가 저번에 석진 씨랑 놀이터에 갔는데, 턱걸이 세 개도 못했어요. 진짜.
I also knew I was able to do 300 chinups from the start. Well do you know? Hyeonjeong? I went to the playground with Seokjin and I couldn’t even do three chin-ups. Really.*
 현정: 이제까지 다 거짓말?
Up till now, that’s all a lie?
 경은: 다 거짓말이었어요. 진짜.

 경은: 네. 우리는 그래도 운동 많이 하진 않지만.

 현정: 조금만 움직여도 힘들어해요.
Even a little movement is tough.

석진: 네. 경은 누나 그거 아세요? 옛날에는 저희 부모님 때에는 신혼여행을 경주로 많이 갔었어요.

Seok-jin : Yes. Do you know that, Kyeong-eun 누나? When it was on my parents' era, there were a lot of couples went to Gyeongju as their honeymoon trip.

경은: 어, 진짜요?

Kyeong-eun : Oh, really?

석진: 네 그때는 모두가 좀 가난하던 그런 시절이었잖아요.

석진: 음, 뭔가 새로운, 새로운 경험을 해보고 싶어서, 그래서 여행을 자주 가요.

Kyeong-eun : Ah, new experience. What kind of experience?

석진: 음, 저 같은 경우에는 좀 장난치는 것을 좀 많이 좋아해요.

Seok-jin : Hm, in a situation like me, I really like mischievous things.

경은: 네, 맞아요. 장난꾸러기잖아요.

석진: 네, 경주에 갔을 때도, 경주 자체가 워낙 새로운 곳이지만 저한테는,그 안에서 또 새로운 걸 느끼고 싶어서, 제가 외국인인 척 하고 다녔어요.

Seok-jin : Yes, when I went to Gyeongju, Gyeongju itself originally has new things but to me, I want feel the inside of those new things, so I have ever pretended to be a foreigner. 

경은: 믿어요?

Kyeong-eun : Did they believe you?

석진: 아, 믿었었죠. 네, 그래서 지나가는 사람마다 외국어로 물어 봤어요.


Seok-jin : Ah, they believed me. So, every person that passed by use foreign language to ask me.

경은: 영어로?

Kyeong-eun : In English?

석진: 네, 길을 많이 물어 봤었어요.


Seok-jin : Yeah, I ask a lot for directions.

경은: 네, 사람들이 근데 영어로 대답해 줬어요?

Kyeong-eun : Yeah, but people answered you in English?

석진: 네, 영어로 대답해 줬어요.

Seok-jin : Yeah, they answered in English.

경은: 우와, 언제 그런 걸 했어요.

Kyeong-eun : Uwaa, when did that happen?

석진: 저는 고등학교 때.

Seok-jin : It was on my high school time.

경은: 고등학교 때.

Kyeong-eun : When I was in high school.

석진: 고등학생때 가서, 친구 한 명이랑 가서, 그런 외국인인 척 하고 다녔었죠.

Seok-jin : I went there with my friend on my high school time, we pretended to be foreigners.

경은: 재미있었겠는데요.

Kyeong-eun : It must be fun.


석진: 네 너무 재미있었어요. 그러다가, 제가 지금도 그렇게 영어를 잘 하진 않지만, 그 때는 더 못 했었거든요. 그러니까 얘기를 많이 하다 보면 영어를 길게 못 썼었어요. 그러다 답답하니까 중간에 “I mean 아 그러니까” 그렇게 말해 버린 거예요.

Seok-jin : Yes, it was really fun. And then, even though now my English isn't that good but at that time, I was worse at speaking English. So if I chatting with my friends, I can't use English for too long. Therefore, in the middle of answering, I will say " I mean ah I mean" I will say it like that.

경은: 아, 갑자기 영어로 쓰다가, 갑자기 한국어로 말했어요?

Kyeong-eun : Ah, while you're using English, you suddenly speak Korean?

석진: 네, 너무 당황해서, 도망갔어요.

Seok-jin : Yeah, I was really panicked so, I ran away.

경은: 그 사람의 반응을 봤어요?

Kyeong-eun : Did you get to see that person's reaction?


석진: 못 봤어요.

Seok-jin : I didn't see it.

경은: 아. 못 봤어요. 네, 그렇군요. 저는 여행을 가는 게 너무 좋은 이유가.

Kyeong-eun : Ah, you didn't see it. I see. My good reason why I go traveling.

석진: 네.

Seok-jin : Yes.

경은: 가서 새로운 사람을 만날 수 있어서 너무 좋아요.

Kyeong-eun : I can meet new people so it feels good.

석진: 음.

경은: 사실 저는 혼자 여행을 간 적이 두 번 있었거든요.

Kyeong-eun : Actually, I have ever traveled alone twice.

석진: 와, 어디로요?

Seok-jin : Waa, where did you go?

경은: 처음에는 호주로 여행을 갔었고요, 물론 그 때는 친구랑 같이 갔지만 거의 혼자서 돌아다닌 적이 많이 있었거든요. 그리고 유럽으로 여행을 갔었는데 혼자 다니는 여행은정말 좋은 게, 친구를 금방 사귈 수 있어요. 그래서 그런 숙소에서 친구들을 만나서 그 친구들하고 같이 돌아다닐 수 있는 그런 장점이 있어요. (아~) 근데 제가 호주를 7년 전에갔다 왔는데 그때 만난 사람들이랑 아직도 연락을 하고요, 유럽을 3년 전에 갔었는데 그 때 만난 사람들 하고 아직도 만나요.

Kyeong-eun : At first I traveled to Australia, of course at time time I went there with my friends but mostly I wandered around by myself. Then, I went traveling to Europe, traveling alone was really nice, I can make friends in a moment. So, in that kind of hotel, I met my friends, and the good point is I could wander around with them. (Ah~) By the way, I came back from Australia 7 years ago and I still contact the friends that I met at that time, I went Europe 3 years ago and I still meet with them.

석진: 와!

Seok-jin : Waa !

경은: 정말 오래 됐는데도, 계속해서 만나서 결국은 정말 좋은 친구가 된 거죠. 여행을 혼자 갔기 때문에 그런 친구들을 많이 얻을 수 있었다고 생각해요. 그래서 더 좋아요. 너무 좋아요. 그래서 더 좋아요. 너무 좋아요.

Kyeong-eun : It have been a long time, but we keep meeting each other and the in the end we became really good friends.. I think that because I traveled alone, I could get a lot of such friends.. That's why it better. It's really good.

석진: 보통 혼자 여행한다고 하면, 저 같으면 정말 무서울 것 같아요.

Seok-jin : Usually if people said they want to travel alone, people like me will really be afraid.

경은: 저도 처음에는 무서웠어요. 근데 한번 해보니까 친구를 만날 수 있는 그런 게 너무 좋아서,한 번 다시 한 번 혼자 여행 한번 가보고 싶어요.

Kyeong-eun : I was also scared at first. But after travelling alone once and since it's good to meet a lot of friends, I want to travel alone again.

Seok-jin : Ah, they believed me. So, every person that passed by use foreign language to ask me.

경은: 영어로?

Kyeong-eun : In English?

석진: 네, 길을 많이 물어 봤었어요.


Seok-jin : Yeah, they asked me in a lot of way.

경은: 네, 사람들이 근데 영어로 대답해 줬어요?

Kyeong-eun : Yeah, but people answered you in English?

석진: 네, 영어로 대답해 줬어요.

Seok-jin : Yeah, they answered in English

경은: 우와, 언제 그런 걸 했어요.

Kyeong-eun : Uwaa, when it has that kind of things?

석진: 저는 고등학교 때.

Seok-jin : It was on my high school time.

경은: 고등학교 때.

Kyeong-eun : On high school time.

석진: 고등학생때 가서, 친구 한 명이랑 가서, 그런 외국인인 척 하고 다녔었죠.

Seok-jin : I went there with my friend on my high school time, we pretended to be foreigners.

경은: 재미있었겠는데요.

Kyeong-eun : It must be fun.


석진: 네 너무 재미있었어요. 그러다가, 제가 지금도 그렇게 영어를 잘 하진 않지만, 그 때는 더 못 했었거든요. 그러니까 얘기를 많이 하다 보면 영어를 길게 못 썼었어요. 그러다 답답하니까 중간에 “I mean 아 그러니까” 그렇게 말해 버린 거예요.

Seok-jin : Yes, it was really fun. And then, even though now my English isn't that good but at time, I more couldn't speak English. So if I chatting with my friends, I can't use English too long. Then in the middle of answering, I will say " I mean ah I mean" I will say like that.

경은: 아, 갑자기 영어로 쓰다가, 갑자기 한국어로 말했어요?

Kyeong-eun : Ah, while you're using English, you suddenly speak Korean?

석진: 네, 너무 당황해서, 도망갔어요.

Seok-jin : Yeah, I was really panicked so, I ran away.

경은: 그 사람의 반응을 봤어요?

경은: 사실 저는 혼자 여행을 간 적이 두 번 있었거든요.

경은: 처음에는 호주로 여행을 갔었고요, 물론 그 때는 친구랑 같이 갔지만 거의 혼자서 돌아다닌 적이 많이 있었거든요. 그리고 유럽으로 여행을 갔었는데 혼자 다니는 여행은정말 좋은 게, 친구를 금방 사귈 수 있어요. 그래서 그런 숙소에서 친구들을 만나서 그 친구들하고 같이 돌아다닐 수 있는 그런 장점이 있어요. (아~) 근데 제가 호주를 7년 전에갔다 왔는데 그때 만난 사람들이랑 아직도 연락을 하고요, 유럽을 3년 전에 갔었는데 그 때 만난 사람들 하고 아직도 만나요.

Kyeong-eun : At first I traveled to Australia, of course at time time I went there with my friends but mostly I wandered around by myself. Then, I went traveling to Europe, traveling alone was really nice, I can make friends in a moment. So, in that kind of hotel, I met my friends, and the good point is I could wander around with them. (Ah~) But I came back from Australia 7 years ago, I can still contact with the friends that I met at that time, I went Europe 3 years ago and I still meet with them.

석진: 와!

Seok-jin : Waa !

경은: 정말 오래 됐는데도, 계속해서 만나서 결국은 정말 좋은 친구가 된 거죠. 여행을 혼자 갔기 때문에 그런 친구들을 많이 얻을 수 있었다고 생각해요. 그래서 더 좋아요. 너무 좋아요. 그래서 더 좋아요. 너무 좋아요.

Kyeong-eun : It was really for a long time, we keep meet each other and the in the end we really become a good friend.. I think that because I traveled alone, I could get a lot of friends.. That's why it better. It's really good.

석진: 보통 혼자 여행한다고 하면, 저 같으면 정말 무서울 것 같아요.

Seok-jin : Usually if people said they want to travel alone, if like me I will really be afraid.

경은: 저도 처음에는 무서웠어요. 근데 한번 해보니까 친구를 만날 수 있는 그런 게 너무 좋아서,한 번 다시 한 번 혼자 여행 한번 가보고 싶어요.

 그리고 석진 씨하고 저하고는 지금 일을 같이 하고 있지만, (네) 어, 일을 같이 하고 있지 않은 (음…) 일을, 다른 일을 하고 있는 친구들하고는 (네) 궁금하잖아요.
 and the two of us work together now but (Yea) um, there is also work we don’t do together, (um…), and other work which friends are doing which we are curious about.

 Seokjin Jin : We talk about girls a lot don’t we. (Yea) And in Korean that are some female idol groups right now right?

 (네) 네, 요새 어떤 그룹이 나왔는데 정말 섹시하더라 (정말 귀엽다) 네, 귀엽더라. (예쁘다) 네.
 (Yea) Yea, these days what kind of groups are coming out and how we have found they are really sexy (Really cute) yea, how cute we find them. (And how pretty) Yea.

 선현우 : 그리고 요즘에는 어… 한 명이 가수로 활동하는 게 아니라 여러 명이 (네, 여러 명이) 그룹으로 (네) 그룹 가수들이 많잖아요? (네)
 Hyunwoo Sun : And these days um… Singers are not just coming out as just one person, but lots of them (Yea lots of them) are coming out as a group. (Yea) There are a lot of singer groups aren’t there?

 그래서 그 그룹 중에서 누가 제일 예쁘다. (음…) 누가 제일 노래를 잘한다가 아니라 (누가 제일 예쁘다) 예쁘다 (귀엽다) 네, 맞아요.
 So who in the group is the prettiest. (yea) It’s not who sing the best (it’s who is the prettiest) pretty (Cute) yea, that’s right.

 진석진 : 그런 얘기를 많이 하죠.
 Seokjin Jin : People talk about those kind of things a lot.

 Hyunwoo Sun : Yea, people talk about those kinds of things a lot, and they ralk about work, (yea) and what, about girls groups, (yep) and female actors. (Yep) Apart from those, what else do guys talk about?

 진석진 : 음… 오랜만에 봤을 때는 여자친구 생겼냐? 이런 말도 많이 하고요, (네) Seokjin Jin : Um… When you haven’t seen each other for a long time, did you get a girlfriend? We talk a lot about this kind of thing too, (Yea)

 저는 이제 거의 (네) 서른 살이 다 되어가는 요즘에는 (네) 뭐, 돈은 잘 벌고 있나, (네) 이런 얘기도 많이 했던 것 같아요.

 진석진 : 보통 여자분들은 반대로 이제 현재나 아니면 과거 이야기를 많이 하죠.
 Seokjin Jin : Normally girls are the opposite, they talk about things which are now in the present or the past.

 선현우 : 네, 제 생각에는 그래요. (네) 그래서 저도 가장 생각이, 지금도 생각이 많지만 가장 생각이 많았던 고등학교 때는 (네)
 Hyunwoo Sun : Yea, that is what I think. (Yea) So the thing I also think about most, I still think about is a lot now but, but I thought about it most when I was in high school .(yea)

 기숙사에 살면서 기숙사에서, 학교 기숙사에서 친구들하고 미래 이야기를 하면서 앞으로 무엇을 하고 싶은지, 나중에 무엇을 하고 싶은지 이야기를 하면서 (으음…) 잠을 안 잤어요.

 선현우 : 간지러워요? 안 하잖아요? (네) 안하고, 어, 이 컴퓨터 좋은데? 이 카메라 좋은데?
 Hyunwoo Sun : You feel tingly? Do we not say things like that? (Yea) we don’t, um. how about something like isn’t this computer good? Isn’t this camera good?

 Seokjin Jin : wow… I want to buy them.
