석진: 이번 주제가 제가 아주 좋아하는 주제라서 그래요.

석진: 인디 밴드.

Seokjin: Indie bands.

경은: 근데, 꼭 그렇게 노래를 부르면서 해야 되나요? 인디 밴드랑 전혀 관련이 없는 것 같은데요.

Kyeong-eun: But, do we have to do it while you sing like that? I don't think it has anything to do with indie bands.

석진: 맞아요. 제 머릿속에는 인디 밴드 가수를 한 명 그리면서 이렇게 얘기했는데, 제가 노래 잘 못 불러서, 그렇게 됐네요.

Seokjin: You're right. Ah, I was talking while picturing a singer from an indie band in my head, but it came out like that because I can't sing.

경은: 웬일이에요 석진 씨? 석진 씨 항상 노래 잘 부른다고 주장했었잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: What's wrong, Seokjin? You've always insisted that you're a good singer, haven't you?

석진: 아, 노래! 사실 제가 고백을 하겠습니다. 제가 노래는 잘 부르지 못하지만, 신나게 불러요.

Seokjin: Ah, singing! Actually, I'll admit it. I can't sing well, but I sing with enthusiasm.

경은: 네, 석진 씨랑 노래방에 꼭 가보고 싶다는 TTMIK 청취자들이 정말 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. There are a whole lot of TTMIK listeners who say they definitely want to go to a noraebang with you.

석진: 저랑 같이 노래방 가는 게 꿈인 사람도 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Right. But I don't want to. Just kidding. So again, having returned to indie bands, are there any indie bands you particularly like?

석진: 저는 작년에 인디 음악을 참 좋아했었어요.

Seokjin: Last year I was so into indie music.

경은: 올해는 안 좋아하세요?

Kyeong-eun: And this year you're not?

석진: 올해는 제가 좋아하는 인디 밴드나 인디 가수들이 많이 나오지 않았어요.

Seokjin: This year the indie bands and singers I like haven't put out anything.

경은: 그래요? 어떤 가수들이 있죠?

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah? What singers are there, again?

석진: “요조”?

Seokjin: Yojo?

경은: “요조” 목소리 너무 귀여워요.

Kyeong-eun: Yojo's voice is too cute.

석진: 네, 그리고 “타루”? (몰라요.) “한희정”? 모르세요?

Seokjin: Yeah. And Taru? (Never heard of them.) Han Hee Jung? You don't know her?

경은: 모르겠네요.

Kyeong-eun: Guess not.

석진: 작년까지만 해도 이 세 명이 홍대 여신이라고 했죠.

Seokjin: Just last year they called her “The Hongdae Goddess.”

경은: 역시 여자들 밖에 모르는구나.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, you only know about women, surprise surprise.

석진: 그럼 누나는 (저요?) 어떤 인디 밴드나 가수 아세요?

Seokjin: So how about you? (Me?) Which indie bands do you know?

경은: 저는 사실 작년만 해도 인디 음악을 전혀 몰랐어요. 주변 친구들이 인디 음악을 좋아해서 그냥 옆에서 들으면 “어! 좋다.” 이러고 말았거든요. 근데 올해부터 조금씩 인디 음악을 듣기 시작했는데, 그래서 뭐 “요조”는 저도 알고 있었고요. 노래 들었었고요. 최근에는 “세렝게티” 되게 좋아하고요. “10cm”는 뭐 워낙 유명해져서... 요즘에 워낙 유명해졌잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, even just last year I didn't know anything about indie music. Because my friends around me like indie music, just by being next to them, hearing it, I ended saying, “Whoa! This is great!”, you see. But I've started listening to indie music little by little this year, and so I knew Yojo, too. And I'd heard their songs. And recently I really like “Serengeti.” 10cm became very famous. These days they've become very famous, haven't they?

석진: 여기서 “10센치”는 “10센티미터”죠.

Seokjin: Here, “10 senchi” is “10 centimeters,” of course.

경은: 네, 그렇죠. “10센치”라고 하니까. “10cm”하고 “세렝게티”하고 또 “브로콜리 너마저?” 뭐 그런음악들 조금 많이 듣고 있는데, 아직도 저는 인디 음악 많이 모르는 편인 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, that's right. Since we call them “10 senchi.” 10cm and Serengeti and also Et Tu, Broccoli? Like, I'm listening to that music quite a lot, but I think I'm still a bit ignorant when it comes to indie music.

석진: 그런데 누나가 인디 음악을 좋아하게 된 그런 계기가 있나요?

Seokjin: But was there something that got you to like indie music?

경은: 이런 이야기하면 조금 욕을 먹을 것 같은데

Kyeong-eun: If we talk about this, I think people will chew me out.

석진: 각오를 하시고

경은: 저희 Talk To Me In Korean 청취자들은 K-POP 굉장히 좋아하잖아요. 아이돌 가수 너무 좋아하잖아요. (맞아요.) 그런데 저는 아이돌 가수들 때문에 인디 음악을 좋아하게 됐어요. 아이돌가수들의 음악을 들으면 물론 신나고 기분 좋긴 하지만, 가사에 내용이 없어요.

Kyeong-eun: Our TalkToMeInKorean listeners really love K-POP, don't they? They like the idol singers so much, don't they? (That's right.) But I ended up liking indie music because of those singers. Of course I certainly feel good and get excited when I listen to idol singers' music, but the lyrics are about nothing.

석진: 맞아요. 맞아요.

Seokjin: You're right. You're right.

경은: 근데 물론 가끔 들으면 신나고 기분 좋고, 아이돌도 예쁘고 너무 잘생기고 그러니까 기분 좋아지지만, 딱 정말 마음이 편안해지는 음악은 아닌 것 같아요. 그런데 인디 음악을 몇 번 듣다보니까, 가사가 너무 마음에 와 닿는 거예요. 그리고 그런 음악들이 저를 편안하게 해 주고 기분 좋게 해 줘서 요즘에는 인디 음악들을 많이 듣고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: But of course if I listen to them sometimes I feel good and it's exciting, you start to feel good since the idols are pretty and so handsome, too, but I don't think it's music that exactly makes you feel carefree. But now that I've listened to indie music a few times, the lyrics truly resonate. And these days I'm listening to indie music a lot because it makes me feel carefree and puts me in a good mood.

석진: 맞아요. 맞아요. 요즘 한류 열풍이라고 해서 아주 인기가 많아지는 그런 그룹들 보면, 예를 들어서 슈퍼주니어, 에프엑스 그런 그룹들 있잖아요. 그런 그룹들 보면 노래도, 저는 잘 모르겠어요. 그게 왜 인기가 좋은 지 잘 모르겠고, 왠지 너무 멀게 느껴지는 거예요. 사람들은 참 좋은데요. 노래만 싫어하는 겁니다.

Seokjin: I know what you mean. These days there are groups that have become really popular, so-called “Korean Wave” groups, such as Super Jr., FX, those kinds of groups. Those groups' songs even, I dunno. And I don't understand why they're popular; for some reason they feel too distant. The people are really good, but it's just that I hate the songs.

경은: 노래 싫어한다고요?

Kyeong-eun: You hate the songs?

석진: 아니요. 싫어한다기보다는, 제가 취향이, 여자 노래를 많이 좋아해서, 네.

Seokjin: No, rather than hate them... My tastes... Because I really like women's songs, yeah.

경은: 장난이고요. 싫어할 수도 있죠 뭐.

Kyeong-eun: I'm teasing. You can hate the songs, too, sure.

석진: 저 너무 미워하시면 안 됩니다.

Seokjin: If you hate me too much, it's no good.

경은: 근데 그 노래들이 중독성이 있는 건 확실해요.

Kyeong-eun: But the songs are definitely addictive.

석진: 맞아요. 맞아요.

Seokjin: Yeah, they are.

경은: K-POP들이 인기가 많은 건 너무 좋지만, 한국인의 입장에서는 조금 가사 전달이라던가, 그런 면에서 많이 부족하지 않나 싶어요.

Kyeong-eun: It's great that K-POP is popular, but from a Korean's perspective, the lyrics are sorta conveying something, or... in that regard doesn't it seem a bit unsatisfactory...

석진: 맞아요. 그런 인기들이 몇몇 한류 열풍을 이끄는 그런 그룹들한테 집중이 되어 있으니까, 저는 정말 많은 외국인들이 좀 더 다양한 한국 음악들을 즐겼으면 좋겠거든요.

경은: 근데 저희 청취자들 중에서도 저보다 더 많이 인디 음악을 아는 분들이 많이 있더라고요. (아, 정말요?) 네. 제가 인디 음악 듣다가 가끔 트위터에 올리거든요. 그럴 때마다 저희 TalkToMeInKorean 청취자분들께서 “이 노래 공유를 해 줘서 너무 좋다.”라는 이야기도 많이 하고요. 그리고 제가 전혀 모르는 그런 인디 밴드들을 저한테 소개해 주고 막 그래요. (정말요?) 저보다 훨씬 더 인디 음악? 한국의 인디 음악들을 많이 알더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: But I understand that we have listeners who know more about indie music than I do. (Ah, really?) Yeah. Sometimes while listening to indie music I tweet about it, you see. And every time I do that, our TalkToMeInKorean listeners say a lot, “It's great that you've shared this song.” And they're sure to introduce indie bands that I've never heard of. (Really?) It seems to me that they know far much more about indie music, Korean indie music.

석진: 왜 저한테는 소개를 안 해 줄까요? 또 그리고 유튜브 보면 그런 인디 음악들만 전문적으로 소개해 주는 채널도 있더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, that's right. Since there are a lot of those channels, I think it'd be great if our listeners looked them up and watched the videos and listened to the music.
