아/어/여 + 요
2009-10-26T09:50:10Z

Jay shin:

The A/V + 아/어/여 form is probably the most important form to learn in Korean and is probably the most frequently used grammar pattern since it can be used as informal polite and informal friendly style amongst friends and people of equal or lower status (by dropping the 요 at the end). Also many other grammar patterns depend on the basic conjugation rules of this pattern to form other grammar patters, see form for other patterns.

Usages
This basic pattern is probably the most common major grammar pattern in Korean. Not adding a 요 is very informal and called 반말, which should only be used with friends, and people that are younger than you and people who are in lower position than you (depends on the situation, so not always). (1) It is used for making informal present tense sentences, adding to the end 요 makes it become the informal polite form. (2) This pattern can also be used to issue a command, similar to V + 아/어 + 라.

Sentence Examples
Conjugation Rule
There are three types of basic conjugation rules, the first two depend on whether or not a 오 or 아 verb appear in the last syllable of the adj/verb stem. The last rule is simply used for 하다 verbs.

Verb/Adj Stem + 아
*If the last syllable of the stem contains the vowels ㅗ or ㅏ, then 아 is added. If it is a stem with no 받침 like 가다, then an extra 아 isn't added.
*Please note this rule does not apply for 하다 verbs, see the section below for 하다 adj/verbs.
*Stems that end in 오 are often contracted to 와 (오 + 아 = 와), especially in colloquial speech.
*Irregular verbs do exist, see the irregular verbs section below for more details.
+Examples for Verb Stem + ㅏ
Verb/Adjective !! Stem !! After Conjugation !! Contracted Form !! Present Tense !! Past Tense
가다 (to go)
가 || 가아 || 가 ||가(요) ||갔어(요)
괜찮다 (to be fine, ok)
괜찮 || 괜찮아 || N/A || 괜찮아(요) || 괜찮았어(요)
좋다 (to like)
좋 || 좋아 || N/A || 좋아(요) || 좋았어(요)

Verb/Adj Stem + 어
*If the last syllable of the stem contains any vowel other than 오, 아, and is not a 하다 verb then it becomes an 어. Note that verb stems with 이 turn into a 여(see next section), it is due to a contraction of 이 + 어 = 여.
*If the last syllable of the stem contains the vowel 이 and there's no 받침, i.e. 시키다, then it becomes a 여 (시켜). The 여 is a result of the contraction between 이 + 어. The contracted form is almost always used in spoken and written Korean. Also note a seperate table of examples has been created below for the adj/verb stems which end in 이.
*Irregular verbs do exist, see the irregular verbs section below for more details.
여 Verbs/Adjectives (하다)
*Any verb or adjective that ends in 하다 falls under this category.
*The 하 becomes 해 due to a contraction with 하 and 여.
*The contracted form is used most of the time, especially in colloquial speech. However, 하여 is used mostly in very formal situations.

Certain objects or items need to be counted with a specific number system (Native Korean or Sino-Korean). Sometimes the same Korean word is used, but has a different meaning based on the number system, i.e. 분, 번, etc.
Native Korean Numbers
Used with numbers like 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯. However when used with a countable item, the first four numbers become 한, 두, 세, 네 instead. See Native Korean numbers.

I propose a format change, I don't think we should link the Korean roots on the vocab pages, but instead link the 한자 portion only, so something like 입구 <入口> should look like this: 입구 <入[[口.

Also the definition should be on the next line, not the same line as the header, this make its easier to link directly. Thoughts?--Bluesoju 07:50, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
I added section-specific editing help guides. Now that we've been really fleshing out the sections it seems like something that will help people know exactly how to edit any specific section. This will hopefully help us keep our formatting uniform in any page in any given section. Since you've worked so much on the grammar, maybe you can work on that page. I just added a few things to get it started. I put a notice on all the sections that have pages to help edit that section so you can just go to the grammar section and you'll see it. If we're going to do these differently, now is the time to decide how to format and organize these pages. --Mstrum 06:25, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
Sounds like a great idea, we might also want to link to the general guidelines page as well. That's one page i'm gonna have to finish up soon. --Bluesoju 03:08, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
평안 dialect
2009-10-12T15:49:28Z

Jay shin: /* Vocabulary */

DialectTop
Location
This is the standard dialect in North Korea. It's spoken in 자강도, 평안도, and the capital city 평양.
Pronunciation
Grammar
*North Korean adds 여 instead of 어 after compound vowels on verbs

*ㅂ irregular verbs always follow the normal rules when conjugating
*《 and 》 are used for quotes (as opposed to “ ”, 『 』, and 「 」)
Vocabulary
*North Korean tends to use more Korean-based words and not use any foreign-words except some Russian-based words
*Anywhere you see 한 <韓>, replace it with 조선 <朝鮮>
*North Korean doesn't add a ㅅ to a Korean-root with no 받침 in compound words (like 젓가락 vs. 저가락)
*North Korean keeps ㄴ/ㄹ letters when they appear in the initial position in 한자 unlike South Korean (냉수 vs. 랭수) as well as in the middle or end of words (규률 vs. 규율).
*Spacing is used much less (못하다 vs. 못 하다)
Grammar
The 경상 dialect maintains a trace of Middle Korean: the grammar of the dialect distinguishes between a yes-no question and a wh-question, while Standard Modern Korean does not. With an informal speech level, for example, yes-no questions end with "-a (아)" and wh-questions end with "-o (오)" in the 경상 dialect, whereas in standard speech both types of questions end in either "이" or "어" without a difference between the types of questions. For example:

*"밥 묵읏나?" as opposed to "밥 먹었니?" or "밥 먹었어?" — "Did you eat?"
*"머 하노?" as opposed to "뭐 하니?" or "뭐 해?" — "What are you doing?"

Notice that the first question can be answered with a yes or no, while the latter question is to be answered otherwise.

This phenomenon can also be observed in tag questions, which are answered with a yes or no.

*"업제 그쟈?" as opposed to "없지, 그렇지?" — "It isn't there, is it?"
Noun modifiers
*Instead of -이 after a noun, it becomes -이가
**가심이가 아푸다
*Instead of -을/-를, it becomes 로
**물로 묵고
*Instead of -한테, it becomes -인대
::Yes, you're right. Almost veryone pronounce it as 짜장면 and 짤리다. But official pronounciation is 자장면 and 잘리다. You'll see that newscaters or announcers are pronouce it as 자장면. And we should pronounce it as 자장면, 잘리다 at formal places such as presentation. So learners need to know both (자장면 and 짜장면, 잘리다 and 짤리다), i think. --Jay shin 06:26, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
::How about these? 똑같애 and 똑같아, 챙피해 and 창피해, 맨날 and 만날? When speaking formal is the second one always used?
:::Yes. The second one is used. But 만날 sounds awkward because almost everyone pronounce it as 맨날. So if you want to say 'everyday, every single day', just use '매일' instead of '만날' when speaking formal. --Jay shin 15:36, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
