Hyojin: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyojin. Nice to see you, Hyojin. (Nice to see you, Kyeong-eun.) This is your first iyagi lesson, right?

Hyojin: Yes. It's my first time. I'm really nervous.

Kyeong-eun: I think it's wonderful. Since we're doing it without Hyunwoo.

Hyojin: I know what you mean.

Kyeong-eun: Hyojin—what're we going to talk about, since we're among women?

Hyojin: Kyeong-eun—you remember what day it was yesterday, right?

Kyeong-eun: No? What day was it? Yesterday... I worked.

Hyojin: Yesterday was Valentine's Day, wasn't it?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. You're right.

Hyojin: Kyeong-eun—you look really sad.

Kyeong-eun: I'm so sad.

Hyojin: Kyeong-eun—what do we do on Valentine's Day?

Kyeong-eun: I don't do anything on Valentine's Day. Hyojin—what did you do?

Hyojin: I worked, of course.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, you worked. What did you do on the weekend?

Hyojin: I took it easy. I don't think I did anything special.

Kyeong-eun: You didn't give anyone chocolate?

Hyojin: Chocolate? To my dad...

Kyeong-eun: You gave some to your dad, and to Hyunwoo and Seokjin, didn't you?

Hyojin: Yeah, I did.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. That's right.

Hyojin: But Kyeong-eun, you know what?

Kyeong-eun: What?

Hyojin: There are a lot of countries where you don't give chocolate on Valentine's Day.

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah?

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: It's not originally a day when you give chocolate?

Hyojin: I thought that, too, but they say that in foreign countries it's a day where you just go on a date with your boyfriend or girlfriend, or spend it with the person you love.

Kyeong-eun: Wow, that's even worse.

Hyojin: Right?

Kyeong-eun: Isn't it? In that case, Korea and, to my knowledge, in Japan, too, I understand that a whole lot of people exchange chocolate.

Hyojin: Yeah. I'd heard before that chocolate companies in Japan made Valentine's Day a day to give chocolate to the person you love in order to sell a lot of chocolate.

Kyeong-eun: Really? To sell chocolate a lot? They're smart.

Hyojin: I don't know how it is in Japan, but in Korea, at least, on Valentine's Day the women give the men chocolate, don't they?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, that's right. On Valentine's Day, February 14th, the women give men chocolate, and

Hyojin: White Day, March 14th, is a day when the men give the women candy.

Kyeong-eun: That's always unsatisfactory to me. I hate candy, you know.

Hyojin: Me too. Chocolate's infinitely better, isn't it?

Kyeong-eun: But these days I think they don't just give candy.

Hyojin: They go ahead and give chocolate, too, if she likes it.

Kyeong-eun: And they give presents, too. They don't just give chocolate, but rather there are a lot of cases where they give presents with it, of course.

Hyojin: That's right. It's a little awful. That kind of thing.

Kyeong-eun: It's awful?

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: Getting presents isn't a good thing.

Hyojin: No, getting them is good.

Kyeong-eun: It's good getting them, but giving them is awful, of course.

Hyojin: You're asking about the obvious like that.

Kyeong-eun: Giving them is good, too, in my opinion.

Hyojin: Yeah. So good.

Kyeong-eun: Making me sad again...

Hyojin: But Kyeong-eun—we usually exchange things with our significant others too, but like you said, and I said, too, we give things to our dads, our family, or the coworkers or friends around us, don't we?

Kyeong-eun: It's not a day when you're sure to give chocolate and presents to the person you love, but rather you give a lot of stuff like chocolate or candy to the people around you, of course.

Hyojin: Right. And while you give those things, you look forward to White Day, too.

Kyeong-eun: Is that how it was?

Hyojin: Right.

Kyeong-eun: I don't think we'll get much. Will Hyunwoo and Seokjin get us something? Ever?

Hyojin: But Kyeong-eun, I gave Seokjin something a bit big, and Hyunwoo something small, didn't I?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyojin: Since Hyunwoo has a girlfriend.

Kyeong-eun: Right.

Hyojin: With that in mind I did that, but Hyunwoo said, “We'll see what happens on White Day.”

Kyeong-eun: Really?

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: “We'll see what happens” must mean that he's saying he'll give you something small, right?

Hyojin: Right.

Kyeong-eun: We'll see.

Hyojin: Oh well. But I went out on the weekend, too, and on the street, Valentine's Day is from one week before, Kyeong-eun, outside, it's not a joke.

Kyeong-eun: It's not a week before, but almost a month? Since from two months before, because there are so many stores selling chocolate, even though I want to forget Valentine's Day, I can't.

Hyojin: That's right.

Kyeong-eun: They're really selling chocolate everywhere, and there are a ton of hearts, and a lot of those songs come out, and a lot of ads play on TV.

Hyojin: That's right.

Kyeong-eun: It's impossible to forget Valentine's Day.

Hyojin: But Kyeong-eun—that's not only a bad thing?

Kyeong-eun: Of course if I don't have a boyfriend with me, it's all bad, but I think it's extremely good for sweethearts.

Hyojin: And they can have a romantic time.

Kyeong-eun: And when there's someone you like, but because you lack courage, the day can be an opportunity for timid people, too.

Hyojin: Right. While giving chocolate.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyojin: Their feelings a secret.

Kyeong-eun: When you were young, in middle school, had you ever told someone how you feel while giving them chocolate?

Hyojin: My middle school was a girls' school, and my high school, too.

Kyeong-eun: Really?

Hyojin: Yeah. But I had a teacher I liked in high school, you know. I guess I gave him chocolate.

Kyeong-eun: Really? But we don't give them to teachers a lot?

Hyojin: Right. But I gave them with a special thought in mind.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyojin: How about you?

Kyeong-eun: Me, too... I can't recall. Did I not give anything? Usually if it's February 14th, it's before the school year starts, isn't it?

Hyojin: Right. It's winter break.

Kyeong-eun: It's winter break, isn't it? In March, when it's a new school year, you end up with new guy friends, don't you? But since it's always February, I think there was no one. In my case.

Hyojin: Oh, that's definitely good. For women. Women students.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It seems that way. But still, if White Day, when the men give things to women, were first, wouldn't that have been better? But if White Day came first, a little, I think it would have been better.

Hyojin: I agree. Because you don't know who you might give something to.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. If I received presents first, having gotten something, if I liked this person, I can express how I feel, too, can't I? It's a little difficult for women in Korea, having to show how they feel first, isn't it?

Hyojin: That's right. Women have to go first, and I wish White Day were February 14th and Valentine's Day were March 14th.

Kyeong-eun: But still, we don't know if we'll get anything.

Hyojin: If we put a little pressure on Hyunwoo and Seokjin...

Kyeong-eun: Okay. So we've talked about Valentine's Day, and everyone—please leave us a comment telling us how you spend Valentine's Day in your country.

Hyojin: Right. Have a nice day.

Kyeong-eun: Have a nice day.
