Hyunwoo: Hello. This is TalkToMeInKorean’s Iyagi.

Kyeong-eun: Hello.

Hyunwoo: Hello Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: Hello everyone. I’m Hyunwoo Sun.

Kyeong-eun: I’m Kyeong-eun Choi.

Hyunwoo: And with nothing different from normal, you are all listening to TalkToMeInKorean’s Iyagi.

Kyeong-eun: Yep. And you are all at the playground.

Hyunwoo: Yep. But actually everyone (Everyone) isn’t here,

Kyeong-eun: Yea, (We) I mean everyone is with us here at the playground, in spirit, (Yea. Yea.) listening to our broadcast.

Hyunwoo: Yea, you’re right. Right now, we are recording at a playground.

Kyeong-eun: Yep.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun do you come to the playground often?

Me? (Yea) Since becoming an adult I go sometimes.
Kyeong-eun:

Hyunwoo: Ah really? Why?

Kyeong-eun: Because I really like the swing. Actually when I am stressed (Yea) If I ride the swing I found I can get rid of my stress quickly.

Hyunwoo: Ah really?

Kyeong-eun: Yea, so I often come to ride the swing.

Hyunwoo: Right. I think if I saw Kyeong-eun riding the swing by herself, she would look very stressed. That was complicated, right?

Kyeong-eun: It is so difficult…

Hyunwoo: But (yea) Kyeong-eun (Yea) the swing isn’t just for children, (Yea) and adults can play on it to but, (Yea) originally it is something for made for kids to play on isn’t it?

Kyeong-eun: That’s right. Originally it was made for children to play on.

Hyunwoo: Yea you’re right.

Kyeong-eun: So every time I go, I always check if there are any children, and if there aren’t any I ride the swing.

Hyunwoo: Even if there are kids or toddlers ridding the swing, don’t you just take it away and rid the swing anyway?

Kyeong-eun: I’m different from you. I don’t do that.

Hyunwoo: Ahh good. So now, you just go to the playground sometimes (Yea) but how about when you were a child? Did you go often as a child too?

Kyeong-eun: When I was I child I went really frequently. I have an older sister and a younger brother. (Yea) So the three of us always went to the park, and played late. And then our mother would get scold us.

Hyunwoo: Oh. When I was a kid there was a playground near my house, (Yea) but I didn’t really like going to there.

Kyeong-eun: Why?

Hyunwoo: Well, there were some ‘friends’ I didn’t really like,

Kyeong-eun: Did they beat you everyday when you were a child?

Hyunwoo: They didn’t do that.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, then what?

Hyunwoo: The friends that I did like,

Kyeong-eun: Yea.
Hyunwoo: The friends I got along well with and hung out with a lot mostly played on the grass behind the park rather than on the actual park.

Kyeong-eun: On the Grass?

Hyunwoo: Yea, we played baseball or, (ah) um soccer on the grass,

Kyeong-eun: Oh really?

Hyunwoo: Yea, we played that kind of ball sports. (ahh) so when I was little I didn’t really like the playground.

Kyeong-eun: Oh.

Hyunwoo: But now I also go sometimes.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, really? When you go what do you do?

Hyunwoo: When it’s a school style playground there are of course chin-up bars.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, right, right.

Hyunwoo: So I do chin-ups but I don’t really use the swing much. Just when I make a short phone call, (Yea) or when I want get some fresh air, (Yea) I can go there and it is like a park.

Kyeong-eun: That’s right.

Hyunwoo: A little bit.

Kyeong-eun: There aren’t many parks in Seoul (Yea) so instead of a actual parks, I think the playgrounds can act as parks.

Hyunwoo: Right. Right. Finding a park in Seoul in really hard, (Yea) You have gone on many trips abroad so you already know this but, (Yea) when you go to other countries sometimes you can just walk and discover a park.

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: But in Seoul, it is Something Something “Grand Park”, or “Han River Park”

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: If you’re not going to a big park like this, finding a small one is difficult.

//
Kyeong-eun: On the weekend when you are looking to spend time, going to Han River Park, or Seoul Grand Park, or that kind of big place isn’t ideal.

//
Hyunwoo: Yea. So if you want to go to some place with no roads, (yea) no cafes, (right) and no houses, I see a lot of playgrounds. (I guess implied: as an option)

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: And these days when you go to an apartment (Yea) When you go to the apartment block, there is always one playground.

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: So when I go to a friend’s house or I go to a relative’s house and I’m just waiting for somewhere for someone, (Yea) then I think, naturally I to a playground to wait.

Kyeong-eun: Why? Is it because when you want to go for a walk, if you walk and look around, you hate just seeing cars and buildings?

Hyunwoo: Yea.

Kyeong-eun: At playgrounds there are trees, and swings (Yea) so it seems like a pretty good place.

Hyunwoo: Then Kyeong-eun (Yea) when you were little, and even now (Yea) when you are at the playground (Yea) can you tell us what kind of rides are there?

Kyeong-eun: Yea sure. There is the swing, which I have been continuously mentioning since a little while ago.

Hyunwoo: Yea. Can you play explain with the swing is? (Ohhh…) The swing.

Kyeong-eun: It difficult.

Hyunwoo: In English it’s swing right? (how can I explain it?)

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: Well if we are going to explain it, I think I can do it.

Kyeong-eun: Give it a shot.

Hyunwoo: On poles (Yea) there are ropes hanging and

Kyeong-eun: ropes?

Hyunwoo: Yea. There are to ropes hanging and (Yea) in between the ropes there is a place for you to sit. (Yea) So you it is something you sit on and then go back and forth on.

Kyeong-eun: But I don’t think that need an explanation of what a swing is, because they all already know. (Yea, you’re right.)

Hyunwoo: Yea Sorry. Then we won’t explain other things?

Kyeong-eun: Don’t explain other things. (Ok) I think it will be fine if we just say what there is.

Hyunwoo: And what is there?

Kyeong-eun: There is a seesaw.

Hyunwoo: Yea, a seesaw. (Seesaw) Seesaw is the same in English. And what else?

Kyeong-eun: Doing you like playing on the seesaw?

Hyunwoo: I played on it a lot when I was a kid.

Kyeong-eun: A really?

Hyunwoo: Yea. So I have two younger sisters. (yea) so though two of them would sit on the opposite side (ahh) and they would be about the same wait as me.

Kyeong-eun: Cool.

Hyunwoo: Yea it is.

Kyeong-eun: The three of you.

Hyunwoo: Yea, we rode the used it 2:1, but later after they got a bit taller, their weights’ became similar to mine. So we use the swing together and (ahh~ ok~) yea. Yea, and,

Kyeong-eun: There is also a slide.

Hyunwoo: There is a slide. There is a “slide”.

Kyeong-eun: Yea, but you can’t really use the slide after you become an adult.

Hyunwoo: It’s too short.

Kyeong-eun: Yea, to short and (narrow) Yea, too narrow, and it just feels small. If I go up it, I think I will break it for some reason.

Hyunwoo: Yea, I think you will break it for the children.

Kyeong-eun: I can’t ride the slide because I will feel so sorry if I do.

Hyunwoo: So (When you become an adult) yea. So you should go to Caribbean Bay.

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: Yea, there are long slides there which you can ride properly.

Kyeong-eun: You have to pay a lot.

Hyunwoo: Yea. (and then you can go) how much is the entry fee?

Kyeong-eun: Um.. (30 000won?) I don’t remember but, I think it is more expensive.

Hyunwoo: I think it is more than 30 000won. (Yea) Yea. It’s really expensive.

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: When I was little, it fell like I was going down the slide for a really long time.

Kyeong-eun: Yea. But you became an adult. So the feeling ended.

Hyunwoo: Yea, you are right. ( because you went down) These days I feel like I might just hop down it. Because I’m so big now (Yea, you’re right), but it was really scary when I was young.

Kyeong-eun: Um, and what else is there?

Hyunwoo: above that there is a jungle gym.

Kyeong-eun: Um, a jungle gym.

Hyunwoo: There is a jungle gym to.

Kyeong-eun: there is a chin-up bar too.

Hyunwoo: there is a chin-up bar and, also.

Kyeong-eun: A bench? There are chairs too.

Hyunwoo: There is a bench and a chin-up bar, it doesn't seem like an amusement park, does it?

Kyeong-eun: Yea, You’re right. It seems like that (Yea) But if we just say what is there,

Hyunwoo: You’re right. At really, tiny, little playgrounds (Yea) there is just like one slide, one swing, and one bench right?

Kyeong-eun: Yea. There is only that, and at a bit bigger ones there is also a jungle gym.

Hyunwoo: That’s right. These days, sometimes there are big playground type things (Yea) in expensive apartment complexes.

Kyeong-eun: Yea. That’s right.

Hyunwoo: I don’t know what it is called. That kind of playground’s name.

Kyeong-eun: Yea, you’re right. That is really difficult.

Hyunwoo: Yea you’re right. There is this thing people scramble up and scramble down, and there is a net, (right) and a bridge.

Kyeong-eun: What do you call it? What’s that?

Hyunwoo: I don’t know. Anyway the more playgrounds there are the better.

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: Um… When I was young,

Kyeong-eun: actually when I go to a playground the thing that brings back the most memories, I would go to the sand and ?????. That is what I remember most from when I was a kid.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun, you went the sandbox and played?

Kyeong-eun: Yea.

Hyunwoo: I went to the dirt and played.

Kyeong-eun: Yea, it is dirt.

Hyunwoo: They are very similar.

Kyeong-eun: It’s not sand?

Hyunwoo: Is it? I said “dirt games”. “playing with dirt”

Kyeong-eun: “playing with dirt”

Hyunwoo: So now my hands were dirty and I went back home (Yea) and my mother (Yea, she got mad) “Didn’t I say not to play in the dirt!” she scolded (yea) and it was fun.

Kyeong-eun: Yea. It is extremely fun. I guess, I don’t know why it’s fun. Now that I think about it (Yea) it’s because you get dirty. Your body.

Hyunwoo: that it true, um, that seems right. Because you can use your imagination while you are playing.

Kyeong-eun: Yea, and play house to.

Hyunwoo: And in the dirt on the ground I dug a hole (Yea) and above the hole I put down newspaper, and on top of that a sprinkled dirt on top.

Kyeong-eun: Ah…

Hyunwoo: then it became a trap. And the people passing (you played games like that?) fell in. I played like that.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, so that’s how you were.

Hyunwoo: Yea. Yea, I did that kind of thing, and I could have brought and played with a ball but, I could have also brought and played with a stone.

Kyeong-eun: Not a stone for throwing right?

Hyunwoo: No. Not for throwing.

Kyeong-eun: You didn’t throw stones?

Hyunwoo: I would do nothing like that. I only went as far as digging and setting traps and then waiting? Passively.

Kyeong-eun: Ok.

Hyunwoo: I did all sorts of games but, (Yea) these days, I don’t think kids go to the playground much.

Kyeong-eun: I don’t really know. (Yea) But I think because they are playing lots of games they don’t normally go there much. I mean video games.

Hyunwoo: That’s right. When they have extra time they sit in front of the computer or ipod (yea) or Nintendo (Yea, you’re right) or X-box, this kind of thing. And they play a lot of games. (Yea) So when they can (Yea) I think it would be nice if they went to a playground or park type thing more often.

Kyeong-eun: Yea. That would be good.

Hyunwoo: Yea.

Kyeong-eun: I think it would be nice if in Seoul at least (Yea) there were some parks or playgrounds for adults.

Hyunwoo: Yea, will you please make some please?

Kyeong-eun: Yea, I will make a lot of money.

Hyunwoo: Yea. Then I will move to that neighborhood.

Kyeong-eun: Ok.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun and I have now been at the playground until now (yea) and we chatted about the playground.

Kyeong-eun: Yea. But in every country aren’t playgrounds different?

Hyunwoo: I think, they are pretty similar.

Kyeong-eun: Really? Everyone tell us please.

Hyunwoo: Yea. Everyone Did you often go to the playground? And do you still go often now? And when you were young what did you play?

Kyeong-eun: That’s right. When you were you what did you often do for play? And also talk to us please.

Hyunwoo: Yea. Then what are we going to be waiting for?

Kyeong-eun: We are going to be waiting for comments are we?

Hyunwoo: Where?

경은: TalkToMeInKorean.com에서.
Kyeong-eun: At TalkToMeInKorean.com.
