Talk To Me In Korean의 이야기입니다. Hello. This is Talk To Me In Korean’s ‘Iyagi’.

Hello everybody. I’m Seon Hyeon-woo.

Hello everybody. I’m Choi Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong (yes) where are we going right now?

Right now we’re riding the subway.

Yes. We’re riding the subway so (we should talk quietly?) yes, yes. We have to talk quietly but if we talk quietly you know our all listeners won’t be able to hear.

Right. Right now there are no people on the subway (yes) so we can probably speak a little loudly. (Yes. There are no people? Now there are lots of people?) You know there isn’t. (There are a few people. A few) If you compare this time, to peak hour you know there isn’t many people.

Right. So now we have rode on subway and (yes) because we rode the subway shall we start our subway conversation? (Yes. Let’s begin.) Yes. Kyeong-eun do you ride the subway often?

These days I don’t ride the subway much. Long ago I rode nothing but the subway. (Oh really?) These days I ride the bus a lot.

Me too in the past I rode the subway a lot, but these days I don’t really catch it. I ride the bus or taxi, or I tend to walk.

You walk because your house and work are close.

Yes. These days I walk so it’s really good and it has been almost over 10 years since I rode the subway everyday. You know that when I first entered university, was when I came up to Seoul right? (Oh, yes I know.) Originally I was born in Gwangju and grew up there. (There isn’t a subway in Gwangju?) Now there is. (Ah, now there is?) (Oh, I am sorry.) Back then there wasn’t. When I was in high school there was no subway.

Well then, in Korea where are the places that have subways?

As far as I know Seoul, Incheon, and Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, (Suwon), Suwon, and also Ulsan are the places I know but (Oh, that’s a lot.) Precisely where I don’t know. I’ll have to find out. But for certain Gwangju, Daegu, Busan, Seoul, and Suwon have subways. (Yes right.) And of course because Seoul is connected to them, you can include Uijeongbu, and you can also include Ilsan can’t you?

Yes it’s like that. I was born in Seoul and you know I grew up in Seoul. (yes) So when I was young I naturally thought all other places had subways too. (Ah, really?) but I found out they do not. 더라= found that. : )

I wasn’t born in Seoul so when I was young I saw subways on the TV? And when I went to Seoul the subway was something I could ride. I thought like this and when I came to Seoul for the first time and rode the subway the subway felt extremely loud. (Ah really?) In Gwangju because there was no subway if I rode the bus the people in the bus would talk lots while going, especially more than me. When I was in high school I rode the bus in the morning when I went to school, (ah) and at night time night after I finished studying, around 12? (You were tired so…) Other who were also in the situation, when going home would just sleep because they are tired. But when I came to Seoul and I rode the subway everyone was speaking and people were also selling things.

It’s like that but every time it is different. (Right. It’s like that.) You know when people got to work there are lots and lots of people. But not a single person doesn’t do this, everyone just looks at their mobiles or reads a book, that situation is pretty normal.

That’s right. Kyeongun mainly when you ride the subway, in Seoul there is line 1 to line 9, which line do you ride?

Ah, originally I mainly rode line 1 and 2. Recently I moved house sometimes I also ride line 9. (Oh I see.) But line 9 has been made the best subway, right? (yes right.) That line is really good. It’s clean, and it is express to Kangnam, my house is in Kangnam, which is far so if I ride line 9 about 20 minutes? It can take 20 minutes.

But Kyeongeun wait a second. Just before you said express? Express? (Yes, express) Express. (Express) It seems a small explanation is necessary (Yes) the opposite of express is? (it is normal, ordinary.) Normal. Ordinary means the line is normal and express means the line is express. (yes right) Yes so the express subway is the same (yes) Express what is different?

The normal trains stop at all stations. (yeah) At all stations the subway stops and people who ride the express line get off often, there are lots of places to get off. (Yes) At the express line stations people mainly stand. I’m talking about the trains that pass 2 or 3 stations and then stop.

Yeah. The express trains are line 9, and from Suwon or Incheon there is an express line (yes).

When I tell my friends that I now ride the subway to Incheon or Suwon they get really jealous (yeah) ‘Because there is nothing like that in Seoul’. At the moment there is line 9 which is express so that is really good.

Yeah, but is the express line is good because it is new. I think the express service is not a possible thing . Originally lots of people would get off from line 1 to line 8 at all stations (yeah they did) so if you didn’t get off where you wanted it was a bit unfair.

Yeah right. Line 2 is the same at times at all stations (yeah) there are lots of places to get off.

I agree. Kyeongeun now we have spoken about the express lines (yeah) so soon this ‘Iyagi’ will finish and when you have ridden the subway please tell me what is the main thing you do?

I mainly read books. (yeah) I can’t read books on the bus because I get motion sickness. So I like riding the subway. Maybe you don’t know that I like reading books. (When you read books on the subway you look cool.) (A girl that reads books.) Really? I didn’t know. Yeah, I am a girl that reads books. But I read books mainly while I listen to music. The subway is actually really loud. Around you in the subway you often hear everyone’s conversations. So I always listen to music while I read. Or sometimes if I don’t take a book when I go out I just listen to music, or I have a smart phone so I play games or I also use the internet. (Ah, really?) Hyeonwoo what do you do?

If I ride the subway when I am tired I sleep. (Me too) I sleep and I used to read lots of books but these days I browse the internet or facebook, or listen to an audio blog or, that’s about all I do.

Well then Hyeonwoo mainly when you ride the subway do you tend to sit down.

Well, it depends on the situation. If I’m sick I really want to sit. (Yea of course) If I go to Incheon or Suwon no one really stands. (Yeah.) But usually when I go somewhere by subway I try not to go over ten stations. So, because I have to get of soon (yes) if I also sit it’s just annoying. So I just stand.

Oh, really? I am the same the subway car sways and moves a lot so my legs get tired and my feet get sore. (Yeah) So if I am like that I sit down, read a book and I also look around.

Really if I ride the subway and sit it tends to be more comfortable than the bus. It doesn’t sway around (right), Also when you sit down on the subway during winter the seats are warm.

Yeah right. In winter the seats are warmed. It’s really good.

Right. So when I am tired and I sit on the warm subway seats I can’t help but fall asleep.

Yeah. I fall asleep and when I need to get off I miss the station, do you do that a lot too?

Yeah, I do. But we are living in Seoul because we are Korean. Seoul’s subway is really safe. If are listeners also have traveled in Korea for a little while or have started living here we are curious about your feeling of riding the subway. (yeah me too). Is it scary or safe or whether it is convenient or not, we want to know stuff like that.

Yeah, or when you buy a ticket is it hard. I think it is a little different. Long ago you could go and there was a person that you could ask ‘Could I have one ticket, two tickets, and three tickets to where ever please.’ You could buy tickets like this. But now there is a machine, an automatic ticket machine you can only use money and you get to choose the language too.

But in adults’ experience, or for elder people, I think buying tickets might be a little bit difficult.

That’s true isn’t in. But all of our listeners can even do it in Korean. Especially the people who are here listening to this ‘Iyagi (Yeah)’ I think it will be easy for them because they know Korean.

Right. Like that. Then everyone if you have or haven’t ridden the subway in Korea tell us your thoughts.

Yes, leave a comment.

And tell us about your country’s subway system too.

Yeah, I’m a little curious. I’m curious about the places the subway goes and the places you ride it. (Yeah, I’m curious too.) If you have been to Seoul how would you compare your country’s subway, how is it different, how is it the same, let us know.

Yeah, tell us about it.

현우: 저희는 TalkToMeInKorean.com에서 기다리고 있겠습니다. We are waiting at TalkToMeInKorean.com.

Goodbye everybody.

Goodbye.
