Verb + 고 있다 / Verb + 고 계시다 (deferential): English equivalent: present progressive. This pattern is used to express a continuing action or a process. Must be distinguished form V + 아/어 있다 which is used to express the existence of a state or a fact.

Conjugation Rule

  • Verb stem + 고 있다

Conjugation Examples

  • 읽다 (to read) --> 읽고 있다
  • 씻다 (to wash) --> 씻고 있다
  • 하다 (to do) --> 하고 있다

Korean English Notes
동생은 과일을 먹고 있다. My little brother is eating some fruit.
동생은 컴퓨터게임을 하고 있다 My sister is playing a computer game.
나는 음악을 듣고 있다. I am listening to music.
나는 껌을 씹고 있다. I am chewing gum.
나는 신문을 읽고 있다. I am reading a paper.
나는 강릉시 살고 있어요. I live in Gangneung. 살다 often goes in this form)
