Verb + 아/어/여 + 야 하다 : This pattern is used to indicate obligation. This pattern is slightly stronger than V + 아/어 + 야 되다.

Conjugation Rule

If the vowel of the last syllable is either ㅗ or ㅏ, add 아. If the vowel isn't either ㅗ or ㅏ, and the verb is not a 하다 verb, add 어. If the verb is a 하다 verb, add 여.

Once that is done, add 야 하다. From there you can conjugate into different tenses and formality levels. For example, changing the last 하다 to 해요 for the polite informal form (e.g. 가야 하다 → 가야 해요).

Conjugation Examples

  • 가다 → 가야 하다 (가아 contracts to 가)
  • 오다 → 와야 하다
  • 먹다 → 먹어야 하다
  • 가르치다 → 가르쳐야 하다 (치어 contracts to 쳐)
  • 행복하다 → 행복해야 하다 (하여 contracts to 해)
