General

  • 아기/애기 - Baby
  • <胎兒> - A fetus
  • 아/갓난 아기 - Newborn baby

    • 다섯둥이 - Oh, God.. Is this possible?

    • 요람 is outdated expression. 아기침대 is better.

    • Originally, 젖꼭지 means a nipple. But it also means pacifier for babies.

Before childbirth

  • (하다) <妊娠> - Pregnancy, To be pregnant
  • 초음파검사 - Ultrasound
  • - Sex
    • In Korea, doctors should not tell parents the sex of baby. It is illegal. So, sometimes doctors give a hint. 'Your baby is so hansome.' or 'Your baby is so pretty.' or 'Your baby looks like mother/father.' or 'Pink/Blue clothes will look nice on baby.'
  • 입덧 - Morning sickness
    • 입덧을 하다 - To have morning sickness
  • 만삭 - The last month of pregnancy
  • 자궁 - Uterus
  • - The water
    • 가 터지다 - The water break

During childbirth

  • 아기를 낳다 / (하다) <出産> - Childbirth, to give birth
  • - Labor pains
    • 이 시작되다 - To begin to have labor pains
  • () - One´s expected date of confinement
    • 분만 - Natural childbirth
    • 왕절개 - Caesarean operation
    • 하다 - To have an easy delivery
      Right after childbirth, if mother is OK and baby is OK, a nurse says "순산하셨습니다.(Everything is OK)" for the family.
  • 탯줄 - The umbilical cord
    • 탯줄을 자르다 - To cut the umbilical cord

After childbirth

  • 닮다 - To look like
    • 아빠를 닮다

    • ○자 돌림 : For example, '우리 가족은 자 돌림이예요' means that every child has a '준' in their name.
      "My name is 희, my elder brother's name is 태, and my younger brother's name is 석."
    • ~을 따서 짓다 - To call after '아버지의 이름을 따서 지었다.'
  • 를 하다 - To register one´s birth
  • 잔치 - Party given to a hundred-day-old baby
  • 첫돌 - The first birthday
    • 돌잔치 - The birthday party for one´s one-year-old baby

    • Fertility rate in Korea has dropped to 1.19 children per woman. (by 2008)
  • 몽고반 - Mongolian Spots
    • A Mongolian Spot is a benign flat congenital birthmark with wavy borders and irregular shape, most common among people of East Asian descent, and named after Mongolians.
      Asian babies are born with a birthmark on her buttocks. The western people who doesn't know about mongolian spots think it is a bruise. So sometimes, they believe that is 'child abuse' and notify to the police. If you see a bruise on baby's buttocks in Korea, don't be freaked out. It's just a 몽고반. And it will be gone when the babies get old.
