Rule Explanation
Verb/Adj Stem with 오 / 아
If a verb or adjective has a 르 as the last syllable in the stem, and will conjugate with 아, i.e. A/V + 아 / 어 / 여, and the previous syllable contains an 오 or an 아, then 르 + 아 becomes 라 and a ㄹ is added to the 받침 of the previous syllable.
All other Verb/Adj Stems
If a verb or adjective has a 르 as the last syllable in the stem, and will conjugate with 어, i.e. A/V + 아 / 어 / 여, and the previous syllable contains does not have an 오 or an 아, then 르 + 어 becomes 러 and a ㄹ is added to the 받침 of the previous syllable.
