Kyeong-eun: Hello.

Hyunwoo: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: This is Hyunwoo Sun.

Kyeong-eun: This is Kyeong-eun Choi.

Hyunwoo: And Kyeong-eun—we're now in Hyeonjeong's kitchen.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Hyeonjeong invited us and now we're waiting for food.

Hyunwoo: That's right. Now Hyeonjeong is working hard cooking, that's right. The topic we're discussing now is just that.

Kyeong-eun: Kitchens.

Hyunwoo: Kitchens.

주방.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. Kitchens.

Hyunwoo: But Kyeong-eun—we say kitchen [“jubang”] with another word, “bu-eok,” of course.

Kyeong-eun: We say “bu-eok.” I say “bu-eok” more.

Hyunwoo: I think I use “bu-eok” and “jubang” together at about the same time.

Kyeong-eun: For “jubang,” I don't know why, but there are kitchens at diners, aren't there? I get that feeling. Don't you feel that way?

Hyunwoo: I feel that, too, but there are times when I say, “There's something in the 'jubang,'” just at home, too. I guess everyone's different.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I think everyone's different.

Hyunwoo: But do you sometimes even say “kitchen [ki-chin]” in English?

Kyeong-eun: No. I don't.

Hyunwoo: I don't either, but these days usually we say sink or something, in Korean, “shinkeudae,” but when you go to buy a sink, or a stove, or these kinds of things, we say “jubang”-wares, too, but “'ki-chin' blah blah” is used. When you go to somewhere like a department store, you can see the word “ki-chin” a lot, so “ki-chin,” “jubang,” “bu-eok” are all words that are used.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Do you go in the kitchen a lot?

Hyunwoo: Of course.

Kyeong-eun: “Of course”? I can't believe that...

Hyunwoo: Since the refrigerator is in the kitchen.

Kyeong-eun: ...To grab something to eat from it.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. It's not that I often prepare meals in the kitchen.

Kyeong-eun: That's what I thought.

Hyunwoo: Still, these days when I go to the kitchen, since there are cups, and water, and food, there's nothing you can do but go there often, right, Kyeong-eun?

Kyeong-eun: I go to the kitchen often, too. In that case.

Hyunwoo: Oh yeah?

Kyeong-eun: Since I also drink a lot of water and open the fridge door a lot.

Hyunwoo: Changing the question, there are things that other people usually do when they go to the kitchen, aren't there? The behavior known as “cooking.”

Kyeong-eun: What Hyeonjeong is doing now.

Hyunwoo: Hyeonjeong is pouring water now, and boiling water, and cutting food.

Kyeong-eun: It smells delicious.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

Kyeong-eun: I'm looking forward to it. I'm so hungry.

Hyunwoo: So in conclusion, Kyeong-eun and I can't cook.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: But to my knowledge, Hyeonjeong cooks sometimes, but I understand that Seokjin (That's right.) cooks rather often.

Kyeong-eun: I've heard that, but I've never seen it.

Hyunwoo: You haven't confirmed it yet?

Kyeong-eun: I don't believe him. And while Seokjin says “I do this really well” every day, since he's never invited me, I've never tried his food, you see.

Hyunwoo: But then why wasn't Seokjin invited here to Hyeonjeong's kitchen today?

Kyeong-eun: He said he was busy.

Hyunwoo: Oh yeah?

Kyeong-eun: Because he's so busy. He's really popular, isn't he? These days.

Hyunwoo: It wasn't that Hyeonjeong didn't invite him?

Kyeong-eun: Beats me. It's a secret.

Hyunwoo: Actually, I think there must have been some story between Seokjin and Hyeonjeong. So, do you surely cook sometimes in your “bu-eok” or “jubang”?

Kyeong-eun: I don't.

Hyunwoo: It's nice that you're honest.

Kyeong-eun: I did once about two years ago, but it took me two hours cooking doenjangjjigae.

Hyunwoo: So not cooking is good.

Kyeong-eun: Sure.

Hyunwoo: Since it's a bother to others.

Kyeong-eun: It's strange. Seven years ago I used to make food every single day. For about 7 months. That was when I was in Australia, you see. Since I lived alone, there was no way around it, so I had to cook for myself. So I did, but having come back home, since my mother and father are there, I've ended up never cooking.

Hyunwoo: Sure.

Kyeong-eun: At the same time, I think I ended up being worse at it. Bizarrely. Obviously I used to cook well, you see.

Hyunwoo: Since we adapt to our environment.

Kyeong-eun: How about you? Are you a good cook?

Hyunwoo: When I cook, I just cook, but I couldn't go so far to say that I do it well. Because it's been a long time since I cooked, too.

Kyeong-eun: What kind of food.

Hyunwoo: I can do it all.

Kyeong-eun: All?

Hyunwoo: Nowadays if you look on the internet just for recipes...

Kyeong-eun: No—besides that. Foods you've tried making.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. I've made various things, sure. Anyway, Kyeong-eun—we're talking about cooking, so when we cook, there are a a few kinds of utensils used, aren't there? Tools. I was thinking how about if we finish today's lesson having talked once about those kinds of things. First, Hyeonjeong turned on the water. Just before, at first, water. What do we call the part that's used when we turn on the water, again?

Kyeong-eun: A water faucet.

Hyunwoo: Again once more.

Kyeong-eun: A water faucet.

Hyunwoo: That's right. A water faucet. “Sudo” is the pipe that water comes out of, of course. “Ggokji” is the thing that's attached to the end of the “sudo” that water comes out of if you turn it, of course.

Kyeong-eun: “Sudoggokji” [water faucet]. So after Hyeonjeong turned on the faucet, she washed the vegetables with water.

Hyunwoo: And if you want to boil the water, too, you use the stove, of course.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: You put a pot on the stove, and

Kyeong-eun: And first you put water in the pan.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

Kyeong-eun: After you do that, you put the pan on the stove.

Hyunwoo: Sure. You can do it that way, too, of course. Put in the water, and put the pan on the stove, and light the stove, and

Kyeong-eun: Light the stove, and

Hyunwoo: And wait.

Kyeong-eun: You have to wait, of course.

Hyunwoo: You light the fire, and you'll have to cut other vegetables or meet or fish, or various things, of course. You have to chop them, of course.

Kyeong-eun: Of course.

Hyunwoo: The thing you use when you chop them... (A knife) A knife.

Kyeong-eun: And you need a cutting board.

Hyunwoo: You need a knife and a cutting board, but usually there's another word for the knife you use in the kitchen, isn't there? We say, “shikkal.”

Kyeong-eun: Ah. “Shikkal.” Yes.

Hyunwoo: The knife you use when you pare fruit is “gwa-il-kal” [a “fruit knife”].

Kyeong-eun: We say “gwado” [“fruit knife”], too, of course.

Hyunwoo: We say “gwado” and “gwailkal,” and other than that, when we cook food, the knife we use is called “shikkal.”

Kyeong-eun: But usually I just call it “kal” [a knife]. Because, doesn't “shikkal” feel scary? It does for me.

Hyunwoo: No way.

Kyeong-eun: We just say “kal” in my family.

Hyunwoo: At our house we say “shikkal,” this, too, similarly, I think it depends on the person and family.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: And sometimes we use scissors and if we make stew or soup we'd need a ladle, right?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. You need a ladle.

Hyunwoo: Now after stirring with the ladle, also after scooping up the soup, you'd serve it in a bowl, of course.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. A bowl.

Hyunwoo: There are a few different words, but

Kyeong-eun: And a microwave.

Hyunwoo: There are times when you use a microwave, and also there'll be times when you use a gas oven or electric oven, of course. And a toaster.

Kyeong-eun: A toaster, what else would there be... A kettle.

Hyunwoo: There are times when you boil water using kettle and there'll be times when you fry something using a skillet, of course. I think the words we use when we cook are extremely interesting. To boil something. To cut something. To fry something. To stir something. To pour something.

Kyeong-eun: To warm something up.

Hyunwoo: And lastly, the most important: to eat something.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: And after cooking everything and eating everything lastly you'll have to tidy up, of course.

Kyeong-eun: You have to clear everything clean away and do the dishes, of course.

Hyunwoo: The dishes. Cleaning all the dishes and returning them to where they were originally we call “seolgeoji,” but there are some people I know, myself included, who don't cook because they hate doing the dishes.

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—don't act like you don't know.

Kyeong-eun: Not me. For me, it's just only...

Hyunwoo: Talking like you don't know.

Kyeong-eun: It's not that I don't cook because I can't cook, but because it's a pain, actually. That's all, of course.

Hyunwoo: Okay. I'll believe you just this once. So Kyeong-eun, we've talked about kitchens. Shall we talk about something else when we come back next week?

Kyeong-eun: Let's quickly eat the delicious food Hyeonjeong's made us.

Hyunwoo: The food's all ready.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: So thank you for listening, everyone.

Kyeong-eun: And if you often cook in your kitchen...

Hyunwoo: Or if you often grab something to eat from the kitchen like me, please let us know.

Kyeong-eun: Please leave us a comment. Please tell us.

저희에게 알려 주시고 저희는 TalkToMeInKorean.com 웹사이트에서 뵙겠습니다.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Please let us know and we'll see you at TalkToMeInKorean.com.

Kyeong-eun: Have a nice day.

Hyunwoo: Have a nice day.
