Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

현우: 안녕하세요. 경은 씨. 경은 씨, 평소에 경은 씨 좀 게으르죠?

Hyunwoo: Hello, Kyeong-eun. Kyeong-eun—you're ordinarily a bit lazy, right?

경은: 저요? (네) 아니에요.

Kyeong-eun: Me? (Yeah.) No, I'm not.

현우: 아니에요?

Hyunwoo: You aren't?

경은: 굉장히 부지런해요.

Kyeong-eun: I'm extremely diligent.

현우: 그래요? 그런데 제가 옆에서 보면 서점에 가기 싫어서 인터넷으로 책을 배달시키잖아요.

Hyunwoo: Oh, yeah? But if I look next to me, because you hate going to the bookstore you're ordering books through the internet, aren't you?

경은: 그거는 게을러서 그런 게 아니라요, 인터넷으로 배달시키면 더 싸요.

Kyeong-eun: That's not because I'm lazy, but because if you order them through the internet, it's cheaper.

현우: 그래요?

Hyunwoo: Oh, yeah?

경은: 네. 몰랐어요?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. You didn't know?

현우: 몰랐어요.

Hyunwoo: Nope.

경은: 정말 현우 씨는 문제가 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: You've really got a lot of problems.

현우: 알고 있어요. 경은 씨. (네) 그러면 평소에 배달은 안 시켜요? 저는 배달에 대해서 이야기하 고 싶은데.

Hyunwoo: I know. Kyeong-eun—(Yes?) so ordinarily you don't have things delivered? I want to talk about deliveries.

경은: 인터넷으로 사실 책 사는 것 좋아해서, 배달 자주 시키거든요? (네) 근데 정말 신기한 거는 그날 오전 10시에 주문을 하면, 당일 날 오후에 책이 와요.

Kyeong-eun: On the internet, actually, because I like buying books, I often have things delivered, you see? (Yeah.) But the amazing thing is, if I order it at 10 am that day, the book comes in the afternoon that day.

현우: 같은 날에?

Hyunwoo: On the same day?

경은: 네. 같은 날에.

Kyeong-eun: Yep. On the same day.

현우: 그럼 6시간 만에 책이 오는 거예요?

Hyunwoo: So you're saying the book comes in just 6 hours?

경은: 맞아요. 너무 신기하지 않아요?

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Isn't that so unbelievable?

현우: 네.

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

경은: 별로예요?

Kyeong-eun: ...or not very?

현우: 저는 (한국에 있으니까.) 아니요. 그냥 저는 책을 사고 싶으면 한 시간 안에 가서 살 수 있어 요.

Hyunwoo: For me (Since it's in Korea.) No. It's just... when I want to buy a book, I can go buy it within an hour.

경은: 근데 바쁠 때 있잖아요. 너무 일이 바쁘고 서점에 갈 수 없을 때.

Kyeong-eun: But sometimes you're busy, aren't you? When you've got too much to do and can't go to the bookstore.

현우: 6시간이나 기다려요? 그냥 가서 사면되는데.

Hyunwoo: You wait 6 hours? You can just go and buy it.

경은: 현우 씨는 배달 안 해요?

Kyeong-eun: You don't have things delivered?

현우: 네. 저는 책은 직접 가서 사요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. I go and get books myself.

경은: 책 말고요. 다른 거.

Kyeong-eun: Not books. Other things.

현우: 방금 책 물어봤잖아요.

Hyunwoo: You just asked about books, didn't you?

경은: 책 말고 다른 거 배달하는 거 있어요?

Kyeong-eun: Is there anything else that you order?

현우: 있어요.

Hyunwoo: There is.

경은: 뭐에요?

Kyeong-eun: What?

현우: 음식.

Hyunwoo: Food.

경은: 음식?

Kyeong-eun: Food?

현우: 보통 중국집이라고 하죠. 한국에서 중국 음식을 파는 곳을 중국집이라고 하는데, 중국집에서 음식을 많이 배달시키는 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: Usually we call them Chinese “jib”s [houses]. In Korea, we call places that sell Chinese food “Chinese houses,” and it seems like people have the food there delivered a lot.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그리고 또 중국집 말고 배달을 할 수 있는 식당들이 많이 있죠.

Hyunwoo: And also besides Chinese joints, there are a lot of restaurants that can deliver food, of course.

경은: 정말 많죠.

Kyeong-eun: There are tons, sure.

현우: 피자를 먹고 싶을 때에도 피자를 배달시킬 수 있고, (맞아요)

Hyunwoo: When you want to eat pizza, too, you can have it delivered, (That's right.)

경은: 요즘에는 맥도날드도 되잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: These days, you can at McDonald's, too.

현우: 맞아요. 맥도날드도 배달할 수 있죠.

Hyunwoo: That's right. McDonald's delivers too, of course.

경은: 근데 저는 아직까지 맥도날드는 한 번도 안 해 봐서, 꼭 해 보고 싶어요.

Kyeong-eun: But I haven't tried it at McDonald's yet, so I want to be sure to.

현우: 맥도날드도 배달해 주는데, 예전에는 일부 맥도날드만 해 줬어요. 되는 곳도 있고, 안 되는 곳도 있었는데, 처음 한국에 맥도날드 배달이 시작했을 때는 원래 만 원 이상 배달하면 가져다주는 거였는데, 지금은 상관없이 배달을 해 주는데 가격이 좀 더 비싸요.

Hyunwoo: McDonald's delivers, but only special McDonald's stores used to do it. There were places that could, and also places that couldn't, when McDonald's first delivered in Korea, originally they delivered orders of over 10,000 won, but now it doesn't matter what, they'll deliver it, but it's a little more expensive.

경은: 근데 안 되는 지역도 있더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: But I understand there are places that don't do it.

현우: 네. 다 해 주는 건 아니에요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. They don't all deliver.

경은: 그래서 맥도날드 시켜먹고 싶고요, 그리고 그런 것도 있는 거 알아요? 그런 심부름 같은 배달이 있어요. 그래서 편의점에서 뭘 사고 싶은 게 있는데 나가기 너무 귀찮잖아요. 그러면 전화를 해서 “편의점에서 이거랑 이거 사 주세요.” 이러면 사다줘요. 신기하죠?

Kyeong-eun: So I want to order McDonald's, and you know what? There are those errand deliveries. So there's something you want to buy at the convenience store, but going out is too much of a pain, isn't it? So you call someone and if you tell them, “Please buy this and that at the convenience store,” they go get it for you. Amazing, isn't it?

현우: 저도 그거는 별로 이용해 보고 싶지 않아요.

Hyunwoo: I don't really want to try that, either.

경은: 왜요?

Kyeong-eun: Why?

현우: 편의점도 집 앞에 항상 있기 때문에

Hyunwoo: Because there's always a convenience store, too, in front of my house.

경은: 그런데, 그럴 때 있잖아요. 아니면 다리를 다쳤거나

Kyeong-eun: But, there are time like that, aren't there? Or you've hurt your leg, or

현우: 아플 때.

Hyunwoo: When you're sick.

경은: 아플 때, (그럴 수 있겠네요.) 그럴 때 사용할 수 있죠. 혼자 사는 사람이라면 충분히 쓸 수 있을 것 같아요. 안 비싸고 좋더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: When you're sick, (Ah, that's true.) you can use it at times like those, of course. I think people who live alone could use it satisfactorily. I remember it being good and not expensive.

현우: 써 봤어요?

Hyunwoo: Have you tried it?

경은: 한 번이요.

Kyeong-eun: Once.

현우: 그렇군요. 지금 배달에 대해서 이야기하고 있는데, 보통 평소에 배달이라고하면 이제 물건을 가져다 주는 거잖아요. 그래서 음식이 가장 흔한 것 같고, 그 다음으로 사람들이 많이 배달시키는 게 책. 그리고 특별한 날에 꽃, 아니면 케이크를 다른 사람에게 배달해 주는 서비스도 있잖아요.

Hyunwoo: I had no idea. We're talking about deliveries now, so ordinarily if you say “delivery,” these days it means bringing something to someone, doesn't it? So it seems like food is the most common, then the next thing people have delivered the most is books. And on special days, there are services that deliver flowers or cakes to other people, aren't there?

경은: 꽃 배달 서비스 많죠.

Kyeong-eun: There are a lot of flower delivery services, of course.

현우: 꽃 배달이라고 하는데, 꽃 배달 웹사이트 구글이나 네이버에서 쳐보면 굉장히 많이 나와요. Hyunwoo: It's called “flower delivery,” and if you look up flower delivery websites on Google or Naver, loads of them come up.

경은: 정말 많죠.

Kyeong-eun: There are tons of them, of course.

현우: 그래서 쉽게 꽃을 배달시킬 수 있고, 그 외에도 굉장히 배달이 여러 가지가 있는데, 경은 씨 보통 웹사이트에서 물건을 사서 오는 경우 말고, 경은 씨가 다른 사람한테 뭔가를 보내고 싶을 때 배달을 시킬 때도 있잖아요.

Hyunwoo: So you can easily have flowers delivered, and there are lots of other things you can have delivered besides, other than something coming to you that you buy on a website, there are also times when you have something delivered that you want to send to someone else, aren't there?

경은: 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: Sure.

현우: 그런 걸 보통 뭐라고 하죠?

Hyunwoo: So what do we usually call that, again?

경은: 택배라고 하죠. 택배.

Kyeong-eun: It's called “taekbae,” of course. “Taekbae.”

현우: 택배라고 하는데, 보통 택배, 그 “택”은 집이라는 뜻이고, 그 “배”는 배달이라는 뜻이잖아요. 그런데 택배 말고 사람들이 많이 쓰는 게 퀵이라는 게 있죠.

Hyunwoo: We call it, “taekbae,” and usually in “taekbae,” the “taek” means “house,” and the “bae” means “delivery,” doesn't it? But other than “taekbae,” there's the thing people use a lot called “quick,” of course.

경은: 맞아요. 퀵이라는 게 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. There's the thing called “quick.”

현우: 퀵은 원래 영어 단어잖아요. (네) Quick. 그런데 퀵 배달이라고하면, 보통 택배하고 조금 다르게 오토바이로 (맞아요) 배달을 해 줘요.

Hyunwoo: “Quick” is originally an English word, isn't it? (Yeah.) Quick. But when we say “quick delivery,” usually they do home deliveries and a little differently, they deliver by motorcycle. (That's right.)

경은: 정말 빠르게 배달을 해 주는 걸 퀵 배달이라고 하죠.

Kyeong-eun: We call delivering things really quickly “quick delivery,” of course.

현우: 네. 그런데 또 재밌는 거 하나 있어요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. But there's also something interesting.

경은: 뭔데요.

Kyeong-eun: What's that?

현우: 빠르게 배달을 안 해 주는 배달도 퀵이라고 불릴 때가 있어요.

Hyunwoo: There are times when we call deliveries that aren't fast “quick.”

경은: 그런가요?

Kyeong-eun: There are?

현우: 지하철 퀵.

Hyunwoo: “Subway quick.”

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 지하철은 슬로우, slow인데 퀵이에요.

Hyunwoo: Although the subway is “slow,” it's “quick.”

경은: 지하철 퀵은 뭐죠?

Kyeong-eun: What, of course, is “subway quick”?

현우: 지하철 퀵은 설명을 하자면, 보통 오토바이 퀵은 지금 뭔가를 보내고 싶어요. 서류나 아니면 소포, 빨리 지금 보내야 되는 거, 하드 드라이브 이런 걸 보내고 싶은데, 전화를 하면 아마 한 30분 내로 가지러 와요. 오토바이로 타고 오는데 그런 다음에 물건을 맡기면 돈을 내고, 보내는 사람이 돈을 낼 수도 있고 받는 사람이 낼 수도 있는데 그렇게 가는 데 까지 아마 한 시간도 안 걸려요. 40분 정도 걸리면, ‘제가 물건을 보내야지’라고 생각해서 거의 한 시간 안에 다른 사람이 받을 수 있어요.

Hyunwoo: If you'd like me to explain “subway quick,” usually in the case of “motorcycle quick,” you want to send something now. You want to send a hard drive, or documents or a package that you have to send right away or this kind of thing, and if you call someone, they come pick it up probably within about 30 minutes. They come by motorcycle, then when they take the thing, you pay them, and the person who's sending it can pay, or the person receiving it can pay, too, but it might not take even an hour going there like that. If it takes 40 minutes, from the time you think “I have to send something,” the other person can receive it within nearly an hour.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그런데 지하철 퀵은 그냥 퀵보다 싸요. 그냥 퀵이 만원, 만 오천 원, 이만 원 이러면, 지하철 퀵은 칠천 원, 팔천 원이래요. 절반이에요.

Hyunwoo: But “subway quick” is cheaper than “regular quick.” If “regular quick” is 10,000 won, 15,000 won, 20,000 won, then “subway quick” is 7,00 won, 8,000 won. It's half as much.

경은: 절반이죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, half.

현우: 그래서 싼 데, 퀵을 오토바이로 배달해 주는 게 아니라, 지하철을 타고 다니면서 걸어 다니면서 배달을 해 주시기 때문에, 오는데 한 시간, 가는 데에 두 시간, 그래서 한 세 시간 정도 걸려요.

Hyunwoo: So it's cheap, but they don't deliver it for you by motorcycle, but rather, because they deliver it while riding the subway, while walking around, it takes an hour for them to come, and two hours to go, so it takes as much as three hours.

경은: 저는 지하철 퀵은 조금 미안한 생각이 들어요.

Kyeong-eun: With “subway quick” I feel a little sorry.

현우: 맞아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

경은: 그래서 못 하겠어요.

Kyeong-eun: So I can't use it.

현우: 그런데 지하철 퀵이 미안한 생각이 드는 이유가 저는 좀 다른데, 혹시 경은 씨는 어떤 생각 때문에....

Hyunwoo: But my reason for feeling sorry with “subway quick” is a little different. Perhaps, why do you feel...

경은: 보통 지하철 퀵을 하시는 분들이 조금 나이가 많으신 분들이 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: Usually a lot of the people who work for “subway quick” are older people.

현우: 그럼 저랑 생각이 같아요.

Hyunwoo: So you're thinking the same thing I am.

경은: 그래서 그렇게 제가 한 번 해 봤는데, 젊은 제가 지하철로 그렇게 이용해서 왠지 해야 될 것 같고, 할머니, 할아버지들이 그렇게 힘들게 제 물건을 배달해 주신다는 게 조금 미안한 생각이 들더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: So I tried it once, and young me, after using the subway like that, for some reason I guess I had to, and elderly men and women, delivering my stuff for me in such a laborious way, I felt a bit sorry.

현우: 맞아요. 그리고 할머니, 할아버지까지 아니더라도, 젊은 학생들도 있어요. 보면 굉장히, 어떻게 말해야 할지 모르겠는데 지하철 퀵 배달을 하시는 분들을 보면 가방도 허름하고, 옷도 허름하고, 굉장히 편견일 수도 있겠는데, 가난해 보여요. 그래서 좀 미안하기도 하고 ‘돈을 더 드려야 하는 게 아닌가.’ 생각이 들 때도 있는데, 저만의 착각일 수도 있어요.

Hyunwoo: That's right. And even if it's not an elderly person, there are young students, too. Looking at them is extremely, I don't know what to say, but when you see the people who deliver for subway quick, their bag is shabby, and their clothes are shabby, it could just be extremely prejudiced, but they look poor. So you feel a bit sorry, and there are times when you wonder if you shouldn't give them more money, but maybe that's just my impression.

경은: 그럴 수도 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: That's possible.

현우: 그런 식으로 물건을 보낼 때, 퀵을 쓰거나, 지하철 퀵을 쓰거나 저는 지하철이 빠르다고 생각해 본 적이 없지만, 퀵이 아니지만, 평소에 뭔가를 배달 또는 보낼 때는 그냥 우체국에 가서 소포로 보내면 되겠죠?

Hyunwoo: When you send something like that, you use “quick,” or “subway quick,” I've never thought the subway was fast, but, we use “quick,” or ordinarily when we deliver something, and when we send something, you can just go to the post office and send a package, right?

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 경은 씨. (네) 그러면 지금까지 여러 가지 배달 이야기를 해 봤는데. (네) 정말 특이한 거 배달시켜 본 적 있어요?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—(Yeah?) So we've talked up to now about several kinds of delivery. (Yeah.) Have you ever had something really unusual delivered?

경은: 특이한 거요?

Kyeong-eun: Something unusual?

현우: 네. 좀 평소에 배달 안 시키는 무언가.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Something you don't normally have delivered.

경은: 저는 없어요.

Kyeong-eun: Never.

현우: 없어요?

Hyunwoo: Never?

경은: 맥도날드가 제일 신기했고요, 처음에 배달 시작했을 때 맥도날드가 제일 신기했고, 백화점가서 옷을 샀는데, 그 옷이 없을 때가 있잖아요. 그럴 때, 퀵으로 보내 주겠다는 경우가 있었는데, 그 때도 신기하다고 생각하긴 했지만 그렇게 특이한 건 없었어요.

Kyeong-eun: McDonald's was the most incredible, and when they first started delivering, McDonald's was the most amazing, and I've bought clothes at a department store, but sometimes they don't have them, do they? At those times, there were cases where they said they would send them via quick, but while then I certainly thought that was amazing, there was never anything that unusual.

현우: 맞아요. 저도 얼마 전에 옷을 사러 갔는데, 마음에 들어서 옷을 사고 싶었어요. 그런데 사이즈가 맞는 게 없어서 3일 후에 오면 있다는 거예요. “3일 후에 다시 오긴 힘들 것 같은데요.” 이렇게 말을 했더니, 지금 돈을 내고 가면 (맞아요.) 3일 후에 보내주겠다는 거예요. 그래서 그렇게 해서 사무실로 받은 적이 있어요. 저도 지금 생각해보니까, 특이한 배달은 없었던 것 같은데.

Hyunwoo: That's right. I also went a while ago to buy some clothes, and I wanted to buy them because I liked them. But because they didn't have anything in my size, they said it would come three days later. After I said, “I think coming back again in three days is difficult,” if I paid then, (That's right.) they said they'd send it in 3 three days. So I've received things in the office having done that. Now that I think about it, I guess I've never had an unusual delivery, either.

경은: 근데 모르겠어요. 저희가 생각할 때는 “이건 특이하지 않다.”라고 생각할 수 있어요. 왜냐하면 한국은 워낙 배달하는 게 많잖아요. 음식 종류도 정말 다양하게 배달해서 시켜 먹을 수 있고, 그리고 택배나 그런 퀵도 너무나 자연스럽기 때문에, 저희가 특이한 게 없다고 생각할 수도 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: But I dunno. When we think about it, we might not think it's unusual. Because normally in Korea we deliver a lot of things. You can eat really varied kinds of foods that you've had delivered, and because home delivery and “quick” are so natural, maybe we think there's nothing unusual.

현우: 그런 것 같아요. 그래서 배달에 대해서 이야기해 봤는데, 여러분은 여러분 나라에서 평소에 배달을 많이 이용하는지 궁금해요.

Hyunwoo: I think that's so. So we've talked about delivery, and everyone—I'm curious if you use delivery services a lot in your country.

경은: 네. 저도 궁금한데요. 저희 코멘트로 이야기해 주세요.
