Hyojin: Hello. This is Hyojin An.

Kyeong-eun: Hello. This is Kyeong-eun Choi. Hello, Hyojin.

Hyojin: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: What are we going to talk about today?

Hyojin: Today we're going to talk about SNSs, “Social Network Services,” Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hyojin, so what kind of SNSs are there?

Hyojin: The most representative ones out there are Facebook and Twitter.

Kyeong-eun: There's Facebook, Twitter, and actually also Tumblr, and there's also Daily Booth and you can say there is “blogging.”

Hyojin: Yeah. That's right.

Kyeong-eun: Talking about them all lumped together. Do you use them relatively a lot?

Hyojin: Although I seem to use Facebook and Twitter often, actually, I don't have a Tumblr account. What all else is there?

Kyeong-eun: There's “Daily Booth,” and do you blog?

Hyojin: I blog, but I'm doing it in Korean.

Kyeong-eun: And “YouTube”?

Hyojin: I'm just watching people's videos there.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, so you only do Twitter and Facebook.

Hyojin: Yeah. But about 2 or 3 years ago I really used Facebook a lot, too, you see.

Kyeong-eun: Really?

Hyojin: I was really addicted to it. I used it like crazy, but these days I'm not using it that much, and I guess I don't use Twitter everyday or anything, either.

Kyeong-eun: But actually just 2 or 3 years ago, Koreans didn't know much about Facebook or Twitter, didn't they?

Hyojin: Yeah. But I started using Facebook in 2008, you see. I hardly had any Korean friends, then. Among my friends. I think I used it a lot almost only with foreign friends, but these days, I dunno, it seems like I'm coming to not use it very much. We have a TalkToMeInKorean Facebook page, don't we? It seems like I'm getting to go only there often.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. TalkToMeInKorean has a Facebook page, and Twitter, and Tumblr, and Daily Booth, and YouTube. There's all of those, huh.

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: Since there are all of those, everyone please check them out. In my case I use them a lot.

Hyojin: It looks that way.

Kyeong-eun: I use Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, I don't use Daily Booth either, and I also use YouTube, too.

Hyojin: You're popular on YouTube, aren't you?

Kyeong-eun: I'm not really popular. I work a bit hard to make videos, but actually, since we and TalkToMeInKorean have a lot of connections through those things, we seem to use SNS on the heavy side, but what about other people?

Hyojin: Frankly speaking, it doesn't seem to me that Koreans really use Facebook much yet. Many use it, and many are joining, but, also many people bought smart phones, didn't they?

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyojin: So many people joined Facebook, but if I look at the people around me, after trying it out, there are really a lot of people who say, “It's too hard, so I'm done!” and don't use it.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I think it's like that to me, too. On things like Facebook or Twitter, in the last 1 or 2 years, users really increased a lot, you see. At the same time, it seems like there are hardly any people who really use it regularly.

Hyojin: On the other hand, A lot more people in Korea use Twitter than Facebook, and I think really there are a lot of people who use it regularly, too.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It seems like using Facebook is harder than you think.

Hyojin: Yeah. Oh! and, Kyeong-eun—while we're talking about social network services, we skipped something. Before there was Facebook in Korea, there was this SNS, wasn't there?

Kyeong-eun: Right. I meant to mention that too, but actually, there was something called Minihompy, wasn't there? Because there was something you could do at Cyworld called Minihompy, it seems like Koreans are more confused.

Hyojin: That's right. Because they're different. It's extremely different from Facebook, isn't it?

Kyeong-eun: “So how is it that the concepts of Facebook and Minihompy are different?” I think they don't understand this very well.

Hyojin: Right. So to now, it's really been a long time since I used Minihompy, you see. Since I haven't used it for a few years, I don't really even remember, but if I look at the people who are still using Minihompy, they say it's so much easier. Minihompy. For me, personally, Facebook is so much easier, in fact.

Kyeong-eun: I think that's right. Which one are we more used to? It seems like it depends on that. Because Koreans are so used to Minihompy, I understand that changing over to Facebook is extremely difficult.

Hyojin: Still, little by little, it certainly seems like they're changing over.

Kyeong-eun: Thanks to smart phones, of course.

Hyojin: And Kyeong-eun—our company, as I told you before, at TalkToMeInKorean since we have all Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Daily Booth sites, there's a lot of time to use those kinds of services, isn't there?

Kyeong-eun: Right.

Hyojin: So even if we manage our personal page, or tweet, it's not much of a problem, but I've heard that there are places, at other companies, where they make it so you can't use Facebook at all, or can't connect to Cyworld or these kinds of sites.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I've heard that a lot. But to me, I wonder, is that not a bit too conservative at those companies? Promoting yourself in that way at work is helpful. Since it's not that you're just playing. Actually, you have to pick up the trends of the time, but if they just say they're blocking that kind of thing, I think it doesn't work. And instead I think working just becomes worse.

Hyojin: If I think about it, after leaving for work at 8 or 9 in the morning, if I was only working constantly until I went home at 6 or 7, I think I wouldn't be able to concentrate.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, it's not possible, in fact. I don't know why they're like that at companies, but it seems like you wouldn't be able to think. So what do you think the pros of SNSs are?

Hyojin: In my case, I think the greatest thing about them is that I can be connected to friends who aren't in Korea.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyojin: Being able to be connected easily. It seems good that you can get news of people easily, and you can find out about their lives through pictures and such.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Even if they're far away, if you talk and see pictures everyday, it feels like you're close, doesn't it? I guess there's that big benefit, and if you watch things like YouTube, there are quite a lot of interesting videos and things we didn't know about, aren't there? It's good that you can see those kinds of things, too, and it seems like really the whole world has become one. You can even see friends who live far away, can't you?

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: Those things seem so good. So the cons?

Hyojin: One of the cons, once you become addicted, it's hard to quit?

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I was addicted to Twitter, at first, you know.

Hyojin: That's right. You were addicted to Twitter. I remember.

Kyeong-eun: I remember too. I did Twitter first, and it was so much fun, I remember really doing it every single day.

Hyojin: I also was addicted to Facebook, you see. If you ask how severe my addiction was, even though absolutely no updates are coming up, I just keep watching it. Really, I keep watching and keep watching and I'm really falling behind in my studies, of course.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. You don't study well, and you don't work well. If you look at that aspect, are companies right to block them?

Hyojin: Because of people like us?

Kyeong-eun: I dunno.

Hyojin: Beats me.

Kyeong-eun: I guess there are several pros and cons, but still, these days SNS is a trend, and because there's the benefit of really being able to start communicating actively, it seems good that I use it. And in Korea, too, having quickly started using things like Facebook or YouTube more...

Hyojin: Actually, I think people really a lot of times when people use them. There are a lot of cases of using it while doing marketing at work especially in foreign countries, aren't there? Using Facebook or Twitter or YouTube.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyojin: In our country, too, they definitely throw a lot of those kinds of special events through Facebook or Twitter, but when you see them, the number of people attending isn't so high.

Kyeong-eun: So far it seems like it must be like that because people don't use it a lot. That will increase little by little, right?

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: Everyone, do you use SNSs like Facebook and Twitter a lot? Please leave us a comment telling us. And please follow all of TalkToMeInKorean's SNS pages.

Hyojin: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Daily Booth, YouTube.

Kyeong-eun: Please use all of them, okay?

Hyojin: Have a nice day.

Kyeong-eun: Have a nice day.
