Talk To Me In Korean의 이야기입니다.

Kyeong-eun: Hello. This is Talk To Me In Korean's Iyagi.

Seokjin: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, Seokjin.

Seokjin: Hello, everyone.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, everybody.

Seokjin: Kyeong-eun—(Yes?) Today's topic is birthday presents, isn't it?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Today's topic is birthday presents.

Seokjin: Kyeong-eun—(Yes?) It's been a long time since you received a birthday present, right?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, it's been a long time, sure. I think it's been almost a year.

Seokjin: Oh, yeah?

Kyeong-eun: You know what that means, right?

Seokjin: What? Yeah, I know.

Kyeong-eun: And that's not what we were going to talk about. (Yeah.) Seokjin—usually what kind of thing do you give as a present?

Seokjin: I usually give music CDs.

경은: 아, 음악 CD.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, music CDs.

Seokjin: Yeah. Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: Oh, yeah? You like music, don't you? (Sure.) In that case, when you give someone a CD, do you mainly give them a CD with music that the person whose birthday it is likes? Or do you give them a CD with music you like?

Seokjin: Usually I buy something having considered the person whose birthday it is's tastes. (Yeah.) In cases where I don't know, I get them a music CD of something safe.

Kyeong-eun: Oh, yeah? What's the most recent present you've given someone?

Seokjin: Recently... I haven't given it yet.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, but you've definitely bought it?

Seokjin: Yeah. I've certainly bought it, but it's just that the birthday person is too busy. So because I haven't been able to meet them yet, I'm still stuck with their present.

Kyeong-eun: Hm, I see. What was the present?

Seokjin: It's the soundtrack for a movie the person likes, and a music CD I like. So I've prepared two things.

Kyeong-eun: Wow!

Seokjin: Is it bad if they listen?

Kyeong-eun: Would they listen to this? That person?

Seokjin: I think probably they won't listen to it.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Right. In my case, the most recent was a notebook, wasn't it? A diary? I got them a notebook that's like a diary. I think they really liked it. Fortunately. Actually, I think choosing a birthday present isn't so easy. Don't you think?

Seokjin: That's right. That's right.

Kyeong-eun: And I think especially men's birthdays are the most difficult. Isn't there not really much to get men as presents?

Seokjin: Mm, how about a necktie?

Kyeong-eun: A necktie? But even a necktie, it's good for someone who works in an office, but it could be someone who doesn't work at an office, couldn't it? And especially neckties, too, are extremely hard to choose. And also you can't get it having matched it with the suit he has, can you? Because of that, even though you got it for him as a present, if he doesn't wear it, it's senselessly upsetting and stuff, isn't it?

Seokjin: Listening to you, getting men presents really sounds hard.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. It's really hard. So I think it's the most difficult when it's men's birthdays.

Seokjin: Actually, when it's a woman's birthday, since I just got them a CD, it was so easy, but wow, that's hard.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. But no matter if it's a man or woman, actually, are there not people who don't like music, too?

Seokjin: Mm, there could be people like that, of course. Actually, before when I got birthday presents ready for people, but sometimes they got the present and didn't like it.

Kyeong-eun: I think that happens a lot. (Yeah. Yeah.) In my opinion, there's something slightly strange about birthday presents, isn't there? (Yeah. Yeah.) So, a luxury item? If you call it a luxury item, it's a little funny, but there are things that are too expensive to buy with one's own money, aren't there? I think people mainly get things as presents that are pretty but a little too expensive to buy with one's own money. For women. For men, things you need?

Seokjin: Yeah. Yeah. That's right. That's right. Really.

Kyeong-eun: Right? I get men things they need as presents having debated about just what they might need, and in a woman's case, something that's a little pretty, but just a little too expensive for you to get directly? They seem to like if you buy them things like that.

Seokjin: Kyeong-eun! I think I need an iPad these days.

Kyeong-eun: I'm not giving you an iPad as a birthday present. Not me. Among the birthday presents you've gotten, is there one thing that's the most peculiar?

Seokjin: It's not peculiar, but last year I got the most expensive birthday present.

Kyeong-eun: What was it?

Seokjin: Ah, it wasn't last year. It was this year.

Kyeong-eun: This year?

Talk To Me In Korean

Seokjin: Our Talk To Me In Korean family all chipped in a little, and having saved up little by little, they got me my bag.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, that's right. That bag is so nice.

Seokjin: Yeah. I think that it's really nice, too. I carry it with me every time I go out.

Kyeong-eun: That's lucky. Your favorite present? Since you've said the most expensive present is the one we gave you, I feel so good about myself.

Seokjin: I feel so thankful.

Kyeong-eun: I see. And so we've talked about our birthday presents. Everyone, please leave us a comment telling us what the most peculiar present you've gotten is, or what the present you've liked the most is.

Seokjin: Kyeong-eun—do you want to get a peculiar birthday present? Or do you want to get something pretty?

Kyeong-eun: Me? I want to get something good.

Seokjin: Something good?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. And I said I just gave someone I notebook as a birthday present, didn't I? My friend with the most recent birthday was a friend called Alex Finch?

Alex Finch?

Seokjin: Alex Finch?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, it was a friend named Alex Finch, and I really want to wish him a happy birthday again in this lesson. Happy birthday, Alex.

Seokjin: And next month is Kyeong-eun's birthday.

Kyeong-eun: Yep, everyone, thank you for listening. Happy birthday to all the birthday people.

Seokjin: Have a nice day.
