Description

If a ㅈ and ㅎ sounds meet each other, it becomes a single ㅊ sound. The ㅎ (/h/) sound causes the ㅈ to become it's aspirated counterpart the ㅊ sound. Note that when ㅎ also appears in the double 받침 position as a 'hidden' sound, such as in 싫다, that this rule applies as well if conjugated with a ㅈ.

Pronunciation 'Rule:

  • Case 1: 'ㅈ' 받침 + 'ㅎ' → the sound becomes a ㅊ sound
  • Case 2: 'ㅎ' 받침 + 'ㅈ' → the sound becomes a ㅊ sound

Examples

  • 그렇지 → "그러치"
  • 싫지 → 실치
